If you have to beat the champ to be the champ or if we go on recent history we may have to go with Trinity.

 

If we go on paper (as in Paper Tiger) or overall excitement of the collection of talent and the new coaching staff we may have to go with St. Xavier.

 

Again I ask, which team should be Preseason #1? Why?

In 2011/12, UK won the NCAA Championship in basketball. They were the defending champions, true enough, going into the following year. Did that do anything to help that next team? Those guys who were there before weren't suiting up, they'd moved on to the next level.

 

Trinity has shown a great propensity to reload, which you have to respect. But just because the previous team(s) won the title, that does not mean this one will when so many of the faces are different. St. X gave them all they wanted last year and they return significantly more. I see no reason X should not be #1 and we may not truly know which is better until October 4th.

Trinity is defending champ, make that three time defending champ!!! NO one has beaten them in December since 2009. Like all good programs, Trinity RELOADS each year. This is a testament to their staff and program.

 

St. X has a new coach and a new offense. Proportedly has some new weapons to go with returning weapons. Lots of unknowns. . .

 

Trinity is No. 1 till someone beats them in November/ December.

 

Nothing else can be stated that is not as clear as the above! No way St. X is preseason No. 1. If BGP is making a preseason ranking, better not sip too much Shamrock koolaid...

I don't buy the "#1 until someone beats them" line of thought as it applies from one season to the next. To answer the question posed by the thread, I would say St. X should be #1........pre-season, at least based on what we are seeing on BGP.

I don't believe anyone has the grounds to split it. That Trinity has been the best team in the state regardless of class for the last three years is really not that debatable. So either you believe that as the reigning best team in Kentucky for the last three years Trinity is afforded automatic status as #1, or you don't. And if you don't, then there's no reason to automatically afford them the #1 rank in 6A in the face of a more compelling argument that X appears at this point to have a better case for 2013.

 

If you'd like to call Highlands the preseason Kentucky #1, you'd be better served hopping on the X is #1 train.....

Um, have you been reading this stuff? I remember one post that listed the X-men's hardest games as BG, Cincy X, Moeller and then close between Trinity and Central. I'm surprised they didn't put Fairdale ahead of us. As far as who should be ranked first, I don't care. To quote the great Dennis Lampley, "Let them run their mouths, we'll run the field".

So, when Shelby Valley won the sweet 16 three years or so ago in basketball, did anyone seriously consider them the #1 team going into the following year? Heck no...no one with any sense anyway. I've never been one of those guys who believed "#1 till they are beat" bull. Many many many more times than not the previous #1/champ is not the #1 team the following year (considering all sports).

 

In this specific case, if St. X has more returning and appears to be the team to beat, then they have as much right to a #1 ranking as anyone, I don't care who did what the past 2 or 3 seasons. Way I see it anyway.

Those are outrageous claims. All you've seen from the X faithful is excitement for the quickly approaching season. Yes some have said that it is possible X could go undefeated myself included, but no one has been foolish enough to say any of the aforementioned. The latest threads created all seem to be shading X because rivals ranked them ahead of T. Sorry but we didn't make the rankings. Personally i think it's premature but time will tell.
