Whether you young guys like it or not, that is the truth. People who have the most trouble with authority figures, often have an angle that involves a history of going against established rules. As you get older your perspective will, hopefully, change.

I don't think it's that far off. You do realize we've all been on this site for years? We all know which members come and go...

 

The people that I've encountered who don't like police, tend to not want anyone to tell them what to do, whether it be a boss, police, parent or a message board moderator. That's ok, but to single out police is "ignorant at best."

 

Your viewpoint is now understood. Police are not my or any citizens boss. As much as some police would like to believe they are not my boss they serve the general public.

Actually that is exactly what bussiness they are in, customer service. They serve all citizens.

And deserve respect! Which is more than they are receiving from some in this thread.

No, they are there to save your life...at the risk of their own! They are in no way shape or form, some kind of customer service rep that you can push around and treat like dirt. Law enforcement officers are an extension of the American justice system, charged with a sworn duty to uphold the law and protect your life and property for you. The fact that a few bad apples exist in the bunch, in no way changes any of these truths.

This thread was started to illustrate misdeeds by officers that were sworn to uphold the law and protect us and out property (your own words). They should be expected to do that properly, when they don't they should be called on it--they deserve no more benefit of the doubt than the people that they serve. The officers were wrong in this case period. If the citizens do not call them on actions like this then incompetent or corrupt officers are allowed to continue on. That is when someone could end up hurt or killed. I respect the police but I expect them to do their job properly and respect my rights and the rights of others and when they don't I will call them on it and I hope others do as well.

Not necessarily. Police are law enforcement. That's not like customer service at all. While most consider it a public service that doesn't mean they have to kiss everyone's butt. They serve by enforcing laws.

Who said anything about kissing but? But I'll disagree a cops is to serve his community of employment. Key word serve. Some cops forget who they work for the government is the people . Without the people there is no government. I know plenty of friends who are in law enforcement who are great people and do a great job. But the position does not put you above criticism. In fact the position deserves an even higher about of attention and should be expected.

I think I can safely say on behalf of those who are joining me on this, that our complaint lies not with any comments about these particular officers. Our complaint lies in the gross generalizations and aspersions that are being made against all law enforcement officers, based on the supposed actions of a few.

I agree that I believe the majority of law enforcement officers are men and women of great character and integrity that have to put up with a lot of crap, and most of the time it's a thankless job. I have the upmost respect for these people. I have a lot of good friends that are either current officers, or retired officers. And everyone one of them are great, great people.

 

I also understand however how some people have had bad either 1st hand bad experiences or have seen how some of their friends or family have had those experiences. I understand how this, and the fact the news usually shows only officers that have overstepped or abused their authority and how thiscould make them feel that a large percentage of officers are how they've described them.

There are approximately 900k Officers in the US. Think of how few you hear of doing stuff like this. A VERY small percentage....

Think of how many calls for service, traffic stops or other contacts with the general public police have each day.

I believe the Supreme Court ruled that police are not here to protect & serve, they are here to enforce laws. So you are wrong, in a legal sense.
