I need to do some recon to give everyone the exact number of handicapped spaces at SOAS but I think the number is 6. The four that were being blocked and two right in front. One of the two spaces in front was available. However, as the violator stated (or alluded to) he was there for a hour and with that in mind I would be very concerned all 6 spaces were taken at some point in that hour.

Was there another location that could have been used for loading/unloading the mats? I know there is a lot across the street but that doesn't sound feasible if the kids are helping to move mats. From being there and seeing the situation and now knowing what he was doing what would you suggest as a solution?

I do not believe there is a loading dock.

 

I would like to know what the width of the mats is and can they fit through a standard size business door. If so the simple solution would be to go out the side entrance where the parking lot was empty. And, the mats were originally close to that side entrance.

 

Second solution, there are I believe four normal parking spots just to the right of that truck/trailer that were all open when I walked out meaning had he pulled his truck 30 feet forward there would have been no violation.

 

Third solution, there is parking on the street closest to the building (and zero cars parked there), he could have parked there and again it would have been about 30 feet further to go and again no violation.

Well Birdsfan, give me your number and next time I'm moving equipment or mats for a club or school program I will call you and you can help carry the 14 sections of mats down the street with me. And we will even park in the back parking lot since I have an extra volunteer now! Seriously, Break the law?? The kids are 7-12 and they help load and unload the mats. You really need to get out and help more since you have so much time on your hands. You need to spend more time on "Entitlement" Forums then a site designs for sports with your common sence!

I will make this observation: Generally speaking, those who brag the most about all the wonderful things they do are the ones who are least secure in what they really do.

 

I don't care how much you say you do for the WHOLE TRI-STATE AREA, it doesn't give you the right to break laws. And my friend, you throwing "entitlements" at me makes me want to puke! You have no idea how hard I've had to work and struggle to not only get to where I am...but just to stay alive. You sound like someone who has never had to really struggle or face adversity. You will though. If you live to a ripe old age...oh, you will! Then let's see whose shooting their mouth off about entitlement! It's as simple as this: you are not ENTITLED to break the law by parking in restricted areas and fire lanes.

How about teaching them something about respect for the law, respect for fire safety, and respect for those who have a harder road in life. That would be worth more than a mountain of floor mats.

So let me get this right.....the guy that was parked there said the owner of the store gave him permission to park there to load and unload things into his truck as he was volunteering time for a worthy cause? Is that correct?

 

Was he ever asked to move his truck while loading and unloading and did he refuse to do so?

If the guy driving the truck would have moved the truck if needed or if asked then I think everybody needs to let it go and if the owner told him to use that area then the owner is the one at fault not the truck driver. The holier than thou tone is off the charts in this one. Not surprisingly so.........

I've got thicker skin than 99.9% of the people on BGP. Trust me, I'm sure I'll be fine. I'm also 99.9% sure that everyone one here crying about the handicapped parking doesn't do what is morally right and acceptable all of the time either. I'm definitely sure of that as well. I see a lot of stones being thrown around while living in glass houses.

And finally, to BF...it was never my intention to insult/ignore/belittle anyone who deals with a handicap...and if I have done so to you or anyone else, I sincerely apologize.

If no one was denied a handicapped parking spot because of the illegal parking, this is a non-issue, IMO. Just more beating of a dead horse on here. And a business owner and another citizen being thrown under the bus.

I change like the seasons and honestly I feel like if the truck being parked there had became an issue then he would have moved the truck. I'm taking up for the dude who parked there because I feel he is being unfairly vilified on here for no good reason in my eyes. If he would have moved the truck if asked or if needed then what is the harm? Please explain that to me. Who was hurt by him using that available area albeit handicapped parking? Quite frankly the fact that he asked the owner if he could use that parking to load/unload is setting a good example to the kids. We can debate that all day as I feel like too much emphasis is put on what people feel is setting a good example to kids. That whole thought process is hypocrital.

I just live. What happens happens. I just find it funny that people cry about one thing being morally reprehensible but they do morally reprehensible things as well. If you can't live your life 100% morally acceptable then there is no point trying to tell others they aren't morally acceptable. Pot meet kettle.......
