He made the comment about today's media, partisanship and attack politics and said, "If Jesus were President, He would be attacked on a daily basis." That comment got me to thinking, would Jesus be a Democrat or a Republican. The first obvious thought is He undoubtedly would be a Republican because of the abortion issue. Honestly, I don't think anyone can debate that point (although I won't be surprised if the next 2 pages of this thread debate that). But let's try for purposes of this discussion to put abortion aside and talk about the many other issues. For example, would Jesus be in favor of Obamacare? How would Jesus feel about immigration? So what do you think, Jesus - Democrat or Republican?

June 6, 201313 yr I honestly feel like Jesus would be an Independent & I'm not saying that to straddle the fence. As you mentioned with abortion, it's hard to imagine him aligning with the Democratic viewpoint on that issue. Conversely, I think he would be much more apt to take a more liberal stance on the immigration issue. Concerning Obamacare or any other issue where government plays a significant role, it's hard to tell. People often cite the numerous instances where Jesus called for folks to assist the poor & assume he would be more liberal. But the New Testament ideal is that the church provide for those who had genuine need, and in those days the genuinely needy consisted of widows, orphans & generally those who were unable to provide for themselves. The early church actually did pretty well at accomplishing this, but not via taxation/distribution of wealth/government oversight. Those who had the ability to do so gave generously & the church's leaders then funneled the resources to where they were most needed. The fact that people are so dependent on government today is partially an indictment on the church for not doing its part in helping those who have genuine need; but it is also an indictment on those who actually can provide for themselves, but choose to abuse the system & always have a hand out. So I think Jesus would be somewhere in the middle of that. He would not be on the extreme right (no government involvement), nor would he be on the extreme left (government solves everything).

June 6, 201313 yr Perhaps, but let's say Jesus was elected President. He would have to be either Democrat or Republican to get elected. Which one? Political "character" John Stephenson of NKY called in to KET a few years back and said he was considering a run for office under the banner of a new Christian Independent Party. That sounds like the party for the man from Galilee. Having said that, I doubt if our Lord would even bother to register to vote these days, much less run for office.
June 6, 201313 yr I agree with Randy in that he'd be an Independent. - He'd be very liberal on his immigration stance. He's accepting of everyone, regardless of background. - He'd be very conservative on other social issues such as gay marriage and abortion. - I think he'd be more conserative than most think regarding social programs. Remember, Jesus gives us the tools we need to succeed, he doesn't make us use them. I'm reminded of the saying, "Fish for a man, he eats for a day, teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime."

June 6, 201313 yr I agree with Randy's logic but for the sake of this discussion it is Republican or Democrat. Not Independent. Gotta pick one, lil homey. 2 Humped Camel nails it for me. Pro-life Democrat. People act like ALL Democrats are pro-choice and that isn't the case. No doubt in my mind Jesus would be a Democrat and as POTUS he'd be the one person who could convince pro-choice Democrats to be pro-life. Jesus cares too much about people to be a Republican. Yeah, I took it there.
