Ryle 12 Cooper 8

I'm not sure about the forearm. My angle was in a tough position to see it, but I don't think it was on purpose. And I do believe it was hathorn that was ejected. Yet I could be wrong; all I know is the kid was a very good size probably about 6'3 to 6'4

Yes It was Hawthorn that was ejected on incidental contact and no forearm was throw from my point of view it looked as if he raised his arms up for protection and ran into Mason . Hope Tyler is ok but once again bad call by the field Ump.

I was not there but from my son "bad call at first ejecting Hawthorn, throw was down the line nothing either Player could do to avoid the collision, great play by 1st to catch the ball"

On the play at 2nd to end the game, "Meaningless out in the game, he thought it was a great sweeping tag by Ryle SS, though he said it was a bad call, but said the runner should have never of gone."

Unfortunately for Colin he will have to sit the first couple of games next baseball season. Not a big deal though.

Cooper kept battling and both teams made tons of errors and misplays. Fun game to watch if you are not a baseball purist. I would guess each team had at least 5 errors. As the play in the 7th unfolded, it was clearly accidental contact and the runner was out anyway since Tyler tagged him and I do not think he ever touched the base. I did not realize at the time he was ejected and that appeared to be a wrong ruling. Is there some rule that requires the runner to avoid contact irregardless of circumstance? I thought the contact was unavoidable the way the play happened. The last out at second was a great play and tag right in front of bag that player slid into tag on a bang bang play and was NOT a bad call at all. The batter should never have tried for second in that situation down by 4 runs with 2 outs - coaches should have held him at first because even an ignorant spectator like me could tell it was going to be a very close play well ahead of time since the outfielder had the ball in hand at the fence as he was rounding first. I would guess a disappointing end to a losing season at Cooper and congrats to Ryle on surviving some very sloppy play.

I'm pretty sure the base runner is charged with avoiding contact when the defensive player has the ball. In this situation... the way the ball arrived at first base caused the first baseman to lean into path of the runner almost simultaneously with the runners arrival at the base. I had my eye on the ump the entire time and he immediately raised his arm to indicate the out, followed that up with a signal of the ejection and then made a motion where he crossed his arm to indicate a pushing motion from the runner. So I guess from his point of view he felt the runner went too hard into first base and attempted to push the first baseman at the same time. If this were the case then ejection is probably warranted. IMHO the play happened so quickly and in such a manner that it would have been too hard to call it intentional on part of the runner. I could very easily see the runner raising his arms/hands knowing he was getting ready to 'truck' the first baseman. It would only be natural IMO if for no other reason than self-preservation. The right call probably should have been runner out with incidental/accidental contact... no need for ejection. But as usual, hindsight is 20/20.

In any case, it was a good game to watch. Errors on both teams certainly had an effect on the score and without errors who knows what the turn out would have been. Ryle needs to tighten up what has been, up to this point, a pretty solid defense if they want to realize their dream.

Congrats to Ryle... Good luck to Coach Bieger in whatever he does next... Good luck to all of the graduating seniors!

Go Raiders!

Who was the umpire?

There is a photo at NKY.com that shows Ryle SS having the tag in front of the bag as Setser slides in. Great throw from Jeremy Downs and a great tag by Tyler Lonneman.

The Conner/Boone game will be another barn burner!

It wouldn't of made much of a difference in the game but was followed up by another bad call at 2nd that inning to end the game.

For those who said it was a bad call, does that picture change your mind?

I checked into what umpires are looking for in this type of situation. From what I'm told if the defender is drawn into the basepath there is no responsibility to avoid the defender. It seems like the only issue is malicious contact.

The entire Cooper bench did not have a good view of the game-ending play because they were on the first base side. Plus, they were already worked up about the ejection. Yes, he was clearly out live from my vantage point by the Ryle bullpen - as I said earlier it was NOT a bad call, it was the correct call. Pictures do not lie either even though my vision is suspect. It was a great relay and tag by Ryle and a base-running blunder by Cooper, plain and simple. So, the umps got one right and one wrong in the 7th inning. But, the guy was still out on the collision play - he just should not have been ejected.

I love the photo, although it really doesn't show conclusive evidence one way or the other. It shows he has his glove about half way up Setser's shin. It also doesn't show him actually tagging the runner nor can you see in the pic with all the dirt flying up if the foot is on the bag or not, but what it does look like is the foot is actually "at the bag" buyt doesn't show the glove actually tagging him.

Just thought i'd throw my 2 cents in.

Will he? He was ejected, but to the bench, so I don't know how that works. Wasn't that also the case for another team earlier in the season where a player was tossed but restricted to the bench? That is what Colin was.

Difference between restriction and ejection. In both cases the player has to remain on the bench the rest of the game and cannot go on the field (they could technically leave the park but are not required to). A restriction has no carry over penalty. An ejection is a 2 game suspension.

According to the KHSAA he was ejected so he will have to sit to start next season.
