April 26, 201313 yr There are far too many favorites to mention. Here is one I have always loved, even though it was a cover of Conway's signature song. George nails it.
April 26, 201313 yr R.I.P. George Love this one! Everyone should watch this video and listen to the words if you haven't already.
April 26, 201313 yr A classic. When he heard this song he said, " I'll record it but it won't sell, it's too damn sad" Song was later voted the Greatest Song in Country Music history. RIP Possum
April 26, 201313 yr Waylon Jennings, in his song "It's Alright" expressed a common envy when he said, "If we all could sound like we wanted to, we'd all sound like George Jones." RIP George.
April 27, 201313 yr After Junior Parker's tee-ball practice tonight, we went to a little restaurant in Falmouth, which is a Dairy Queen-esque, Mom & Pop kind of establishment. On Friday nights they have local musicians come & play some Bluegrass/Gospel. Not my cup of tea, but I was really wanting a BLT & some ice cream. Anyway, the song selections that I can remember were these: I'll Fly Away, Victory In Jesus, In The Sweet By & By, I Saw The Light and.....He Stopped Loving Her Today. The last one garnered considerable applause.
April 27, 201313 yr Read this in a AP article: He was a beloved and at times a notorious figure in Nashville and his problems were just as legendary as his songs. But when you dropped the needle on one of his records, all that stuff went away. And you were left with The Voice.
April 28, 201313 yr I really wish I had went and saw him at Renfro when I had the chance. Folks should really take advantage of Renfro because there are some greats of country music that make a visit every now and then. I was able to see Merle last year and one of my favorites of today Jamey Johnson. Here is a nice tribute that Jamey did for Mr. Jones on his 80th birthday. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9XEkDquXao
April 28, 201313 yr When George was getting started he idolized Roy Acuff. Hank Sr met him and told him to stop trying to sound like Roy and to sound like George Jones.
