April 26, 201313 yr They need depth if they do sign him, and if they don't sign him we're out of luck. You and voice of reason enjoy your swiss cheese. Watching the great highlights of Eifert against sub par defenses all sarcasm intended as I type this. Just like Teo was so great and look how he did against a good sec foe in the NC game. If you all think Eifert was the best available at the time. I've got great property minus the ocean with seagulls everywhere flying around the intersection of 275 and Colerain Ave. to sell you. As for LB, Rey is a second team LB at best on any other playoff contender squad. And they need a beast ILB! Eifert was the one person from ND that would have started at Alabama. He had a very good game considering that he was NDs only true receiving threat and Saban had a month to game plan for him.
April 26, 201313 yr If you guys are making the argument of "The bengals took the best player available" I'm not so sure about that. Don't forget Sharrif Floyd, DT (Florida) was available, and was a projected top 10 pick. I would have liked a safety personally with this pick, and in the 2nd round draft Ertz, TE (Stanford). From what I saw, I liked Ertz more. That being said, no going back now.
April 26, 201313 yr I don't have that big of a problem with this pick. Gresham has been so so the last couple years and Eifert is a very good catching and blocking TE. Personally I wish they would of taken Shariff who was projected at #3. Peko imo is so overrated, he can't penetrate and is beaten off the line most of the time. Shariff and Geno in the middle would of been fun to watch. The problem I have is if the Bengals do what Mel Kiper expects them to do and that is draft Manti Teo with the first pick in the 2nd round. He reminds me too much like Rey Rey, a guy who can't get off the block when a lineman comes out to block him. A Hellbird endorsement goes a long way with me. On Peko, although I am not a fan of his on the field the Bengals are deep at DT with young guys (picked up Devon Still and Brandon Thompson) last year so I would not draft DT at all this year. If the Bengals draft Teo I will be upset too. The good news is I don't see it in the second round. I think they are going to draft the best S and best RB available (in no order) in the 2nd round and/or some combination of that with their 3rd round pick too.

Safety Cyprien with the 1st round 2 pick. If he is available, RB Franklin with the second round 2 pick. If Franklin isn't there, there is a lot of talk about the Bengals liking RB Bernard but I could see them looking for the bargain pick with second round 2 pick and hoping to get Bernard in round 3.

For those that talk about Manti... I don't want him at 37 either. But how far do you let him fall? Is he off the Bengals draft board in general? What if he falls to 53? Or the 3rd round? Interested then? I think at 37 they are targeting Cyprien or Lacy. I don't think both will be gone, but traditionally there is a lot of trades at the top of round 2, so we'll see. If they are both gone, I could see them moving back again for better value at a need position.
April 26, 201313 yr Would it bother anyone if they went Safety and a tackle like Watson in the 2nd as long as they came away with someone like Lattimore or Barner later on in the draft?
April 26, 201313 yr If Cyprien is there, you take him without a doubt. I love myself some Eddie Lacy and Montee Ball (even the kid from North Carolina), but Cyprien is the clear best safety behind Reid, Elam, and Vaccaro....

Burfict is there if they want to move away from Rey. I just don't see them going ILB unless it is a huge bargain like Te'o in round 4. As I posted in the draft tracker thread, keep an eye on OT Terron Armstread if he hangs on the board and is available for a later Bengals pick.
April 26, 201313 yr Well Eiferts a stud. I also like Ertz if we thinking TE. S and RB tonite, and its shaping up well.
April 26, 201313 yr Author And if they sign Smith to a deal tomorrow??? And if they don't?…8 other teams took OL in the first round to address need and yes, depth. If the Bengals utilize Eifert and Gresham in the same sets I'll eat some crow. If not, or we lose a lineman due to injury and have to sign a long on the tooth has been who gives up a sack/s a game. I'll kindly remind you. Let's hope they address more important needs this evening.
April 26, 201313 yr All those tackles getting drafted is the best thing that could happen for the Bengals chances of signing Smith. Is there any team any where that has any interest in Smith now besides the Bengals? There wasn't a single team willing to offer Smith more than the Bengals before the draft. Surely there aren't any other options for Smith now after the draft. The reason Smith hasn't signed is all on Smith. He thinks he is worth more than the Bengals are offerring but he can't find one single team that agrees with him.

They have used numerous 2 TE formations last year and I'm sure they will now also.
April 26, 201313 yr Eifert could of gone in the top 10. He has the talent. This is only the first pick, I am sure we will see the LB and OL positions addressed. Eifert is more than just a TE. He lined up all over for ND and can cause matchup problems. I think AJ and Andy will love this. I think Eifert will be better than Gronk for NE. My problem with the pick is that the Bengals in recent years have had a poor record of developing tight ends. And let's not forget the coaching staff's blunder in the playoff game vs. Houston in zeroing in on Gresham in the first half rather than get A.J. off and running early. Eifert's skill set reminds me of Chase Coffman, and that's not a knock on Eifert because Coffman was a marvelous receiver in college. He just never had to block much in Missouri's spread offense. Hopefully Eifert is a better blocker.
