The womenfolk in my family tell me that some schools take prom WAY more seriously than others. Evidently it's kind of a badge of honor at Mason County to dress to the nines, etc.

 

I wasn't supposed to know how much everything cost but time has a way of revealing life's little secrets.

$1100 avg high for KY maybe even NKY, but how about places like NY, LA or any very affluent area. What do you think those little brats on "My Sweet 16" spend on prom?

 

Prom is such a waste of money, the kids at the local schools around here show up around 9 or 10pm walk down the red carpet for photos and almost all are gone from prom before midnight. My son went 3 years in a row and spent maybe 6 hours total in 3 years, and at that he was there longer than most.

I paid my daughter $50 to not join Girl Scouts last year. I might see if $1,000 will keep her away from two proms.

I told my daughter at a very young age that I'd buy her whatever sports equipment she needed as long as she didn't cheer.

Along that line, apparently the prom is a monster thing in Nelson Co., to the point that parents will spend large amounts of money on their kids. Like, for instance, a helicopter. Others have gone similarly all-out, spending in the thousands to one-up their buddies in the prom delivery department.

 

It goes even further, I found out from discussions at the office today. Some folks say many parents and other family members -- not a small minority and perhaps even a majority -- will go so far as to go to the prom location to await and cheer on their promgoers' arrival. I found that to be extremely freakin' weird. Cut the cord already, people.

I just asked my wife what she thought the average would be & she guessed $1,000. I would have guessed half that.

Not is the neighbor I live in. I do not know of any parents spending that kind of coin on this.

I am wondering about these new consignment shops popping up that specialize in prom/bridal/sorority wear. I know I've heard a lot of girls use this for formal wear for their sororities, is this a faux pas for girls in high school going to prom? I've seen beautiful gowns posted and jewelry as well. Is this a no no for girls?

Don't have daughters. Problem solved.

$1100 is excessive. Even for girls.

 

Tickets for a couple? $120-$150 reasonably. If you can't find a dress for less than $400, you aren't looking hard enough. Now, if your kid thinks she needs to have custom dyed, custom fitted, special order, maybe. But do they really need that?

 

Shoes are being far overestimated... If they are committed to finding them, you can get shoes for a good price... They don't hardly wear them anyways... Show up, take them off to dance. That's been my experience anyways...

 

Make up/acessories/tanning/etc. Shouldn't exceed $150/$200. So maybe in total over $600, but shouldn't be near what they are saying... IMO
