It's prom season and the class of 2013 isn't going cut rate.

 

Prom spending is making a big comeback as the recession eases.

 

A study from Visa and research company Gfk says this spring's average prom bill will top $1,110.

I know Prom is special but that is a lot of money.

It's crazy. My tux was like $70 + $40 for dinner = money well spent. :lol:

My brother just got his tux. $134 Two tickets $90 The only thing left is the ride and dinner.

 

1100 sounds a little far fetched.

Not far-fetched at all for the young lady. Gown, hair, jewelry, etc. set us back close to that and that was a few years back.

Gown: new....the Sky's the limit. I'd say the low end of average is between $300 and $400

Shoes: anywhere from $50-125+

Hair: at least $75

Makeup: at least $35.

 

I got creative with my daughter. One dress was a clearance that needed the beading sewn back on. It was a tedious, pain in the rear, but we got the dress for $25. Her Senior prom dress was a bridesmaids return, so we got it for $75 because it wasn't a size many would wear. I believe it was originally about $500.

$1,100?? That is a ridiculous amount of money... Even if I paid for the limo completely, our bill wouldn't have even come close to that number...

Parenting 101 - Bribery is good!

I don't buy that as an average, not at all.

I just asked my wife what she thought the average would be & she guessed $1,000. I would have guessed half that.

This is our last year that we have to buy a prom dress. Fortunately the dresses have been about $200.

Accessories are borrowed--the girls are great about helping each other out with the purses and jewelry.

Shoes are either borrowed or last last year's shoes---who sees the shoes with that long dress? Plus they take them off to dance, anyway.

She hates how the salon does the hair so we are spared with that expense.

But new expense this year is a few sessions of tanning?!

So we are at about $250 so far.

So how much does a gown cost? And shoes?

 

Senior prom, gown for us was about $650. And that was with a discount because she modeled at a local bridal/gown shop show that spring. Shoes were easier on the wallet; maybe $50 or $75. Hair about $75. I don't remember the other little incidentals. Easily 9 Benjamins by the time was all said and done.

Her first prom was when she was invited to Lawrence County's affair as a sophomore (she was supposed to be at least a junior but they didn't know her and she may have fudged the paperwork a little. That cost us all of the accoutrements plus a motel for the night and mom & dad's meals.
