How many points shy of the scoring record is Kobe?

About 7,000

80 games at 25 PPG = 2000 pts per year so probably 4 years

So that is what at least 3 seasons away? Was he planning on playing that long anyway? Either way I hate to see it. Kobe is definitely one of the greatest of all time.

He's been quoted this year as saying that he believes he can play 5 more years. Guess we'll see how this Achilles injury affects those plans. I hope he at least passes MJ.

He has been giving the vibe lately that he would retire once his contract ends next season.

Depends on how you define "like."

No way someone can say he's not an all-timer.

Who here even came close to saying that?

One of the best handful of players in league history. Hope he comes back for a few more productive seasons. I hate it for him, he's pushed himself to the limit this and every season. As of now I rank him somewhere in the top 6 players of all time along with Jordan, Magic, the Big O, Russell and Wilt. He deserves better than this injury. Great player should go out on their own terms.

I wonder if he has played his last game as a Laker? If they amnesty him they save 80 million.

Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak: Using the amnesty provision to waive Kobe Bryant in July was not even something being discussed.

This is D12's chance to earn back some of the affection from me that he lost during the season.

These chicks don't even know the name of my band!

Kobe Bryant of Los Angeles Lakers to be out 6 to 9 months after Achilles surgery - ESPN Los Angeles

6 months would put him back right before the start of the next season. 9 months would put it around midway through the year, though still before the all-star break.

Both of those are the earliest of early diagnosis. A lot of guys take up to a year before they are ready, some never come back. I hope it's not the end for Kobe, but the 6 month time table is a little generous IMO, even for Kobe. Unless he can go get some plasma spin treatment to that achilles , it's not looking good for his recovery time. But speaking of platelet rich therapy, man that stuff must be the bomb. Defintely one of the most successful procedures I've saw in sports medicine, even more so than Tommy John. Not saying that Kobe's game was looking old, but for a few years we were seeing a different Kobe Bryant. After he had the plasma spin therapy though it was like someone loaded him up in the Delorean and took him back to 99', I mean he went from 40 year old knees to 20 year old knees just in one off season. Just absurd the amount of hop he got back in his game after that, dudes been way springy these last couple of seasons, vintage Mamba.

Kobe said he'll be back for the season opener. I'm not going to doubt him. Not only is it hard to find anyone in history who has worked harder at taking care of their body but he also has the means to get any kind of crazy experimental treatment done as well. I won't doubt him until the season opener comes and he isn't playing. I'll go ahead and list him as questionable/game-time decision.

I hope he at least passes MJ.
Is that something personal for you because you like him better or do you think it will elevate his status above Jordan in some way?
