A lot of people really would consider that a joke, as in a championship game there really isn't going to be a HUGE upset, but for real, looking at X's road, that game would probably be up there.

Given what happened in the first meeting, this was a huge upset. Hardly anyone outside of the team gave Trinity a shot, maybe rightly so.

Lexington Catholic as a #4 seed in 1997 when they went on the road to #1 seed Rockcastle Co. for a win in the playoffs and then went to Danville to beat Danville in round 2 of the playoffs on the last play of the game. I believe those two wins on the road were the type of upsets that got the program where it felt it could compete with anyone. They went on to have some other great upsets, such as, Boyle Co. in 1998 & 2004, St. X. in 2003, Male in 2001, Riussle in 2000 playoffs when they were the #1 seed, Beechwood in the mid 90's, and Henry Clay in 1996, and of course Highlands at Highlands this year. Those are just some of their wins as they climbed the ladder over the past 15 years. You pick the biggest upset of the bunch.

 

Speaking of those upsets over those 15 years, I was listening to a documentary of John Wooden's career at UCLA and I noticed that it was his 15th year when they won their first title and his program wasn't starting from scratch. Funny how some think it took Lexington Catholic a long time to win one. Of course, those are the same people who complained that UCLA had an unfair advantage of some kind.

^ nah....we were way, WAY more physical than X, that wouldn't change after that game.

Lewis County over Lawrence County in 1993 I think. Many in the area thought that was a major upset.

I've thought about this one for a while and here are a few that might go somewhere.

 

1993 Prestonsburg over Danville. I know it's already been mentioned but I think this might be the biggest one I can think of. Danville was riding a 42 game winning streak and most feel this was the best of the four year run from '91 to '94. This is the same Admiral team that handily beat the AAA runner-up (Lincoln) and the AAAA runner-up (Shelby). Prestonsburg played their best and everything we just like it had to for them to pull of the big upset.

 

2002 Danville over Boyle. I don't know how big this was but it stopped the Boyle streak at 47. Danville would make the A semi-finals but fall to a good Mayfield team. Boyle would get a healthy Brodie Overstreet back by midseason and Brandon Smith would mature alone the way. Boyle's defense by the end of the year was as good as anyone in the state as they won their 2nd straight AAA title.

 

The Bourbon Playoff run of 1997 has to take it for a series. Everything fell perfectly for them on that run. The weather, the upsets, the timing. They upset an unbeaten #1 ranked Boyle team (who had defeated them earlier), they beat a Lex Cath team (that had upset a good Danville squad), Lawrence County (another talented team) on the road to Louisville.

I'm not sure that most people would think that LexCath's win over Highlands this year was an upset.

 

I would of course, then again I thought Colerain's, DeSales', and St. X's victories over the Birds were upsets as well :banana:

I'm sure it was upsetting to you ... :lol:

 

Why anyone would call LexCath over Highlands an upset is beyond me, especially since the Knights were ranked second in 3A for most of the season.

Riussle in 2000 playoffs when they were the #1 seed

Winning at Russell in 2000 wasn't an upset ... LexCath was clearly the #2 team in 2A that year but still had to escape Russell's upset bid.

 

LexCath's only two losses were very close games against Boyle County. Russell had lost to three teams from higher classes, but none of them won a playoff game.

I don't think so. Trinity was playing MUCH better in November than they played in September. X peaked in September. I won't claim that I predicted the Trinity win, but I did think it would be a close game.
