Oh really, The Rocks lost to eventual state champ MBA, GCL power Cinci St. X, a pretty tough Manual squad and eventual district champion Seneca. Each by a TD or less. Sounds more like the Rocks had a meatgrinder schedule. Luckily they we able to get it all together and defeat St. X on their way to defeating St. X yet again that year for their 15th title.

Any way you paint it BB & co. stumbled out of the gate his senior year for some reason.IMO they should have gone undefeated, not with the best QB in the country and a bunch of surrounding talent.Beating X was in no way an upset.

going back a few years 1976 Corbin beat a Mayfield team that was said to be one of the top 50 teams in the nation for corbin 3rd state championship and 1st in 21 years 1980 corbin beat a fort cambell team that had the states longest winning streak at the time at one time that year corbin was 3-3 and and had to beat middlesboro the last game of the season to make the playoffs

I remember those duels between Corbin and Mayfield. Don't short sell those Corbin teams. They were huge in the line and strong. Ran that ball control bone and had the hosses to match Mayfield's front 7. Classic games in '76 and '77.

I thought the '80 team got hot at the right time just as the '82 team did. Both of those teams lost early games, caught the right breaks and then proved their worth on a final run to the title.

That was not an upset but it was a serious case of underachievement on the rocks part prior to that game.

Are you talking about 2003 or 2005? Trinity's 15th or 16th State Championship?

Talk to me about the surrounding talent. By the time the X game rolled around the Rocks were playing four sophmores on offense. The defense was hampered by injuries and a suspension of a key lineman. X had a few D1 caliber athletes on their team as well. There was no underachieving, the Rocks weren't as talented as they had been the previous two years. But with Brian's refuse to lose attitude and Coach Beatty and staff retooling the team the Rocks scored a huge upset (you can look it up) over St.X and used that momentum to propel them into the final were they faced St.X. Once there they did one of the toughest tasks in sports. They defeated the same foe twice. The Tigers found out how tough a task that really is just this past December. The fact is X was undeated and #1 in the state while the Rocks were winless coming into this game. That is an upset no matter who "paint"s it.

Upsets, by definition, are when an inferior team beats a superior team. In the X-T game referenced above,T had the best player ever to play high school football in Kentucky, and went on to win state. Also, the 0-4 start was deceptive. T had played powerful opponents. They were hardly inferior. A similar occurrence was the 2004 X-T game, with T the three time defending state champion. X won big (38-16) but we know now it was not an upset because X was the state champ that year. The thread here is "Biggest upsets in high school football ever" and neither of those games even begin to qualify. All they would merit is sophomoric partisan needling of a rival. I admire H in his post above. He tried to post truthfully and cited an upset of his team, rather than hijacking the thread in a lame attempt to needle a rival. Two upsets spring to my mind: In 1999 Covington Catholic, 3A, upset preseason 16th ranked nationally St. X in the opener 24-14. X went on to take state: CC finished with a losing record. In 1991 tiny Holy Cross, with a 4-3 record (two of the wins vs. Iroquois and Western) beat Trinity 15-14 to end a fifty game win streak. Some of us would benefit from studying Copernicus. We (and our team) are not the center of the universe.

^ I agree...as most of us around the program, KNEW, really, and truly that we were going to beat X in that 2003 season.

Some would also benefit from reading the rules of this board and not sling personal insults. Questions like the one that started this thread have no right or wrong answer as they are based on opinions. I have mine, you have yours.

1983 Undeafeted Highlands at Conner, sub-district/district playoff game. Conner won 13-7.

That one still hurts !!!! :irked:

In 2001 the Bell County Bobcats traveled to Lawrence Co. to play the Lawrence Co. Bulldogs in the regional semifinals. Bell entered the game as a decisive underdog. The game was'nt even supposed to be close. Many fans were predicting LC to beat Bell by 40 or more.

LC was undefeated at that time, the favorite to win the region, a lock to the state finals, and alot of talk was circulating that that team could be the team to end Boyle Co.'s streak.

That LC team was a senior dominated team with lots of experiece and a ton of talent. It featured speedy QB Dontae Wright (Miami of Ohio signee), the leading rusher in the state in RB Michael West (Marshall signee), and 6'8 285 lb. MLB Jarrod Hostetter (University of Tennessee signee).

Bell County was a young team, with little playoff experience. They had finished 6-4 the year before, losing in the first round of the playoff's. They had graduated a load of senior starters and leaders the year before. They were a team looking to make a mark and re-establish Bell County's dominance in mountain football, as well as discover an identity under new Head Coach Dudley Hilton.

Lawrence County's stadium stands were packed with Bulldog fans, so much so that the field was surrounded by fans, 2 and 3 deep in some places. LC took the field running out of their "Dog Pound" Dog House with billowing smoke and "Who Let the Dogs Out" blasting over the PA. BC could barley run onto the field for the LC fans. I distinctly remembering one fan telling our players that they had made a long 4 hour trip for nothing.

However, despite the fact the Bobcats were outmatched, they would not be outplayed.

BC upset LC by a score of 8-0 in a defensive war. Dallas Greer scored on a qb sneak in the final minute of play, and RB Luke Akers topped the TD off with a 2-point conversion run.

LC got the ball back with several seconds remaining, but could do nothing. Wright completed one pass, was sacked by DE Justin Barton on the next play, and then Luke Akers picked off Wright as he flung a desperation hail marry pass in the finals seconds. BC kneeled out the clock.

The entire game was a war. Neither team could get much going offensively, and the defenses were playing extremely hard. It was one of the most physical and hard fought games I have ever been apart of. Afterward's I compared it to a title fight with both fighters just slugging it out, both drained and on their last legs, but neither wanting to fall. Giving and taking punches and stumbling and surviving.

West needed something like 115 yards to break the state record for most rushing yards in a season, or career (not sure which one). BC's defense held West to 18 yards.

That final drive you could just tell Bell was in better shape and wanted the game more. BC converted several big time 3rd downs, one in particular where it was 3rd and 3 and Akers got the ball, was hit in the backfield, fought off the defender, stumbled forward, then ran over Hostetter for the first by an inch. FB Kevin Napier also made some huge plays on that final drive, both blocking and rushing. I later compared the final, game winning drive of Bell as if their offense was a tank, slowly trucking down the field. It was 3 yards and a cloud of dust the entire drive. I don't think Bell Co. had more then maybe 5 yards on any run, and it really wore out the Bulldogs.

That was the biggest upset I have witnessed, or ever been a part of. It was pretty special, and you could feel the magic. A complete team effort, in every since of the term. It's games like that, that are the reason you play or coach in HS IMO.

Man you write that yourself? Gave me chill bumps reading this. I agree with you that it was the biggest thing I know I had been apart of in my whole life. I can remember the crowd and how loud it was and seeing our fans jumping over the fences to get out and celebrate. Great moments man. From my perspective the game was big as in the four years that I was there Bell believe it or not hadn't made it to the 3rd round. I know alot of my fellow seniors that was on the field will tell the story of this game to their grandchildren. We battled a group with many big names. and we was a team with one name Bell County. I think that maybe set the tone for the next couple seasons gave Bell county that grit back that it so desperately needed.

Then again, maybe that Lawrence County team was just way overrated. They barely beat Belfry, 26-20 in overtime, and Belfry lost five games that season.

Lloyd beat NC 7-0 when NewCath was at least a 3 touchdown favorite

Biggest T/X upset was Trinity over X in 1958...I've heard the Louisville Times picked X by 4 or 5 touchdowns. Pretty much all T vs. X games since then cannot qualify as a huge upset because of the parity of the programs and the huge rivalry that has developed. IMO rivalry games don't qualify as upsets quite as often - the true upset occurs when a monster of a team overlooks an obviously inferior opponent (like Holy Cross ending the Rocks' streak)

May have been....... but I doubt it. They were still undefeated, had a TON of talent (just look at the college signees off that team that I mentioned), and were the favorites to win by as much as 40 according to some ppl. They were also the favorites to win the region, and featured one of the top backs in the history of this state (at least in regards to records.)

Every team has a bad game. I think you could probably contribute LC's win against Belfry to that.

Even if they were overrated, that doesnt cheapen Bell Co's upset over them, because Bell was supposed to have ZERO chance in winning that game.
