No ref is going to give Cooper two foul shots, plus the ball, with less than a half a minute to go in a tie game when they want Holmes to win, on a play 75 feet from the basket. For the ref to have done that, he would have had to be a mind-reader.

With that said, I will say this. If that is the case then those refs shouldn't be officials in the first place. A good official, or not even a good official but a competent official would call an intentional foul no matter when it occurs and should never and I repeat NEVER let the time left in a game or the situation dictate what calls he does and doesn't make.

Right. Like the hand check "foul" I saw decide an Illinois state championship game -- tie score with 4 seconds left.

 

This play was similar to the end of the Iowa State-Kansas game a week or so ago. You have to give a little leeway if the fouling player is flat on his back. Was he reaching for where thought the ball might be, or was he deliberately grabbing an ankle to impede progress?

 

You could blow a whistle or call a foul on every play, which is pretty much what happened in the second Holmes-Scott game. On that night, I attended a refereeing seminar and a basketball game broke out.

If the Cooper fans still want to complain about the no call intentional...how about when Morgan GRABBED Bolden around the waist on a break away and essentially tackled him earlier in the game...Again, move on. If all you can point to is one call, your team obviously didn't do enough to win.

 

Actually I was at that basket and Morgan actually had a had on the ball as they were in the air.

 

I don't want to focus on the refs because there were many instances other than what the officials did or didn't do in a one point game that would have helped both sides. Cooper had this game and they let Holmes back in or Holmes made the plays to win it based on your perspective. Congrats to Holmes and especially Cooper on a season of firsts and keeping the bar set high. Good luck to the Seniors, you will be missed.

Uh ... the play took place near where I was sitting. I'd also like to see the replay to see if the ref made the call only after glancing down a second time.

Finally watched the 2nd half of this game. A few thoughts on the calls being debated in this thread.

 

Most obvious: I can't imagine the rationale behind not calling an intentional foul on Coston. Seemed textbook to me.

 

Blocks/charges: Only 3 in the 2nd half. 2 were called PC fouls (both correct) and one was a block (incorrect IMO).

 

5 second call that resulted in a TO for Cooper. Really close but you can see the official right in front of Sully recognize it slightly before the whistle.

 

"Phantom foul" on AJ Collins: tough to see from the camera angle. His left arm shot out as Bolden was going right. If it made contact and the official thought it impeded James then it was a foul. Too hard to tell.

 

Someone said Chames got away with a pushoff on the missed FT where he then scored. Disagree. No push.

 

Foul #3 on Lou was ticky tack. He set a screen and rolled and made very little contact. No foul IMO.

 

Sully wanted a walk when Bolden dove for the ball in front of the Cooper bench and then slid. No walk. You're allowed to slide.

 

Not a great job on closely guarded late in the game. There were times Bolden was holding the ball with a defender within 6 feet and no count is started at all. They also had a count going and stopped it incorrectly when there was a switch defensively. Count does not stop.

 

Chames travel after rebounding a miss in OT: hard to tell if he got pushed. Bad camera angle.

 

 

When did the travel call against Collins happen that someone said happened while he was dribbling? I didn't see it in the 2nd half.

 

I watched the last play of the 1st qtr. No travel by Bolden.

 

I also didn't see any "carries" by Bolden.

For the next two years people will complain about 'carries' by Bolden. They aren't going to get anywhere. #1, he handles so well that some people can't fathom he did it without a carry. #2, I've seen it countless times where kids dribble on the side of the ball and everyone wants a carry. And this isn't a carry, nor is there any way for this to be called and for the game to have flow.
