Let's get this straight. Doug class of 78 Dickie class of 80.

 

Dickie was a sophomore the year of the no call at Freedom Hall. Dickie only started one game his sophomore season, the state final game. Bolden is farther ahead of Dickie as a sophomore. Tough to compare the era's as summer ball was not as prevalent in the late 70's as it is today. Player's develop much faster today. I believe Bolden's ceiling is higher than Dickie's. Bolden's numbers are better but Dickie was on a better team. Bolden is probably the best player in the region as a sophomore Dickie was not even the best player on his team as a sophomore. Dickie was the dominant player his senior season and it paid off with a full ride to UK where despite knee injuries he had a fine career including a NCAA regional MVP. Hopefully, Bolden will become the next big thing to come out of Holmes making all of us Bulldog alumni very proud.

I think Beal graduated HS in '80, so the early 70's he would have been pretty young. How old were you guys. I used to hang with one of Mark's older brothers. Spent many a day in the summer plain' "strike out" at John G.

 

We're talkin' 9 or 10ish... Dickie was dynamite from the word go. Truly, even in a losing effort on our part it was exciting to see him in action. Everyone knew even at that age a great career was on the horizon. He got so much publicity while in high school, that's when our student body created the sarcastic holding of newspapers up to our faces while his name was being called during player introductions before a game. Then of course we'd soon have to eat our pride and watch him destroy us. :lol:

Yes he did, Dickie was a sophmore and played off bench.

Can't talk about the great Holmes teams of the late 70's without posting the pic of the worst non-call in the history of the KHSAA:

Charles Hurt is that hand, and that picture hung in Coach Reynolds Flynn office til he left Holmes. Sad sad day, channel 19 covered that game.

I'd be remiss, but forgot to mention Beal's running mate in 1979. Phil Davis. He was a very good guard. I think the Holmes guards with Beal 1978 through 1980, was Dave Derkson 1978(really good running back as well). Derkson is who Beal replaced, I believe. Phil Davis in 79 and Mark Elmer in 1980.

Holmes had a deep run of talent from about 75-80.They won the region in 76, 77, 78 and 80.

In 79 they lost to Highlands at Holmes in a game where Holmes squandered a lead late in the 4th quarter but that was a darn good Highlands team. Vories, Sullivan, Schlarman and Muntis. Clyde can correct me if I am wrong.

Was just a young pup back in those days but they are all great memories. Trips to Maysville High School for some knock down drag outs. Trips to NewCath for the NIT. Can still remember those hanging scoredboards that listed fouls in the one end zone.

Id say Bolden is the quickest guy since Dickie Beal, but he's a long way from matching Beal's resume.

 

See, G1 is a "know-it-all"....

I never witnessed Beal but I've heard all the stories and he's a NKY legend. With that being said, Bolden is a sophomore, pretty much an unstoppable force offensively and he has a jumper to boot. I think by the time it's all said and done he's going to be on the same level with and offensive game to boot.

Dickie would close the doors at every gym he played in. SRO. Not sure if Bolden will make that happen, but he might............we shall see.

Now I remember! You're the kid who sat next to me whose finger kept getting smaller and smaller!

There is more to the game than shooting also. Beal played great D also. Bolden is not on the same level as Beal when it comes to Defense. So the all around better player is Beal. IMO

Agreed on D aspect.

Schloemer graduated in 1978 from Holmes and Beal graduated in 1980. Beal played after Schloemer...
