I remember the Lloyid Invitational game that Dickey had against Harrison County. He had a dunk or two that game in 1980. I remember, Ray Meyer (Depaul) and Joe B Hall (Ky) were there.

2 of the quickest players I have seen in the 9th. Mr Beal and Mr Bolden. If you have to choose one to lead your team who do you pick. I think their games are familiar.

I was there at Freedom Hall with my next door neighbors Tony and Dewey Litmer. I was headed to Holy Cross the following fall and hated Holmes, but I rooted my tail off for Dickey Beal. No one better and that ranking will stand for a while. Can we have a rule that no one can comment unless they actually saw Dickey play? And I was on the same court with him when I was 10 years old and he played for NKCCYC while he put up 30 at Turners. I had the best seat in the house! I believe the coach was Governor Housely.

I was on the same court with him in High School and my jock is still sitting at the top of the key from trying to guard him.......he was incredible.

I was there when Holmes played CCH in the Lloyd tourney. I can still picture Joe B walking in.

I'd be remiss, but forgot to mention Beal's running mate in 1979. Phil Davis. He was a very good guard. I think the Holmes guards with Beal 1978 through 1980, was Dave Derkson 1978(really good running back as well). Derkson is who Beal replaced, I believe. Phil Davis in 79 and Mark Elmer in 1980.

Holmes had a deep run of talent from about 75-80.They won the region in 76, 77, 78 and 80.

In 79 they lost to Highlands at Holmes in a game where Holmes squandered a lead late in the 4th quarter but that was a darn good Highlands team. Vories, Sullivan, Schlarman and Muntis. Clyde can correct me if I am wrong.

Was just a young pup back in those days but they are all great memories. Trips to Maysville High School for some knock down drag outs. Trips to NewCath for the NIT. Can still remember those hanging scoredboards that listed fouls in the one end zone.

79 team was really, really good.

I would also say as someone who played against Dickie Beal more than once, he was almost impossible to guard. He was absolutely "scary" quick.

Dicky had plenty around him. Everyone knows Bolden is going to have ball with not many options. His shot this afternoon was money. Onions. Have to wait and see his progression after he grows taller and stronger. Bolden's game ahead of Dickie's at this point as a sophomore.

Funny you mention it. I have a permanent memory of this as well. Everyone nudging each other "Look... there's Joe B !!!" ... It was a BIG DEAL. With him there to see Beal we all felt proud feeling like the 9th Region was on the map.

Indeed, it was a big deal.

Two additional comments that have thus far escaped mention....

 

1. Dicky was good enough that DePaul made him their number 1 recruit in January of 1980. Taking recruitment by UK out of the picture for a moment, at that moment DePaul was perhaps the top program in the country... we'll see if Bolden is getting looks from Duke, North Carolina, etc. in 2 years.

 

2. As a "sophomore", Dicky was not nearly as important to his team or as good a shooter as Bolden. Not even close. However, a few things to consider... (a) as said before, Dicky was a sophomore on a loaded team with the only Mr. Basketball ever to hail from these parts in the 20th century as a senior, so pretty good company, and (b) for the truly observant of this thread, the Cottage AC team with Blasingame, Volpenhein, Shumate, etc. were all guys that graduated in 81.... I"m getting to the point ..... Dicky was an extremely young sophomore, only turned 17 in September of his senior year..... I don't know if any kids start that early now. And I hear that Bolden is an "old" sophomore... maybe someone can elaborate. Bottom line... the "who was better as a sophomore" comparisons probably need some qualification.

 

One more... I have not seen Bolden dunk. Not that it makes him a better player, but I saw Dicky dunk about 30 times in high school, and a lot of those were reverses. Pretty spectacular sight for a guy who was then about 5'10".

Was that the year when Holmes came onto the court and the Holy Cross student section threw stuff on the court in a taunting gesture? It was one of those years between 78-80.
