Do a lot of restaurants do this?

Why? So we can pay for the business owner to have cheap staff? Its really an interesting thing Americans have been suckered into. I worked for tips at one point so I know how it is. I usually go up to 30-35% for great service and never below 20%.

I agree.. I tip and usually tip well. $5.00 minimum even if our bill is under 20.00. Never understood why they aren't paid more and the customer tip less. My wife thinks everyone should be tipped. Hairdresser, daycare.. Why? They set their price and that is what they should be paid. I don't get a tip for my job.

Like you I never tip less that $5.00 up to a bill for $20.00 Over $20.00 I will add some more . I do this because I can afford to . In my opinion if the service is bad it is generally the kitchen's fault and not the waitperson .
I like the tip information on the receipt.

:thumb: It's very helpful. Hard to do math and corral the children at the same time.

That would be correct, sir. No calculation needed. Real simple.

Same here. Unless I just feel the need to give more.

Over Christmas Break for example, my wife and little girl were out to eat at an O'Charley's; our server was an older woman, probably close to 55 or so. Long story short, she saw our daughter, then began to show us pics of her grand-daughter and boy was she proud.

Well, I hadn't actually given to the Salvation Army bell ringers like normal, so I left her a tip that was 100% of our bill. Just felt it was needed.

Other than doing this a time or two a year, I'm the 20% rule as well; but, this is a great idea. I see nothing wrong with it.

I feel the waitress in an extension of the resturant. If food is bad, if service is slow it is all part of the gig. If this is consistent tips will continue to be poor and it would be a sign for the waitress to look for a new place of employment if she is good. Adversely if the food and service is good, her pay increases by better tips.

Keep in mind the waitress often pool tips with the other waitresses (I don't like when they do this- it cheats the good ones) and they also have to share with busboys and bartenders.

Another question. They split up your large group and add 18%. Do you tip extra? I do if service is good. If service is bad the waitress lucks out.

Most Asian restaurants do.....

I don't like it.

I tip 20% virtually every time....if service is exceptional, I tip 30 - 40 %

Part of being in the biz, I guess.

You never have to tip the added gratuity. You may refuse it.

Yup. All you have to do is mark it out...

I tip based on service. Bad service equals bad tip. My starting point is 20%.

I'm confused by this. You just said your starting point is 20%. That's what I was basically saying. Average service gets 20%. Exceptional service gets more and poor service gets less. The starting point should be up closer to the 18-20% range.

You never have to tip the added gratuity. You may refuse it.

What if it is resturant policy stated up front?

15% should no longer be considered the standard.

Why not, considering the prices keep going up and up, 15% today is more than 15% Ten years ago.

Ru, you better step up your game. That $38.00 bucks isn't going to get you much. Just becuase it says steak house , doesn't mean it is date night quality.:D

As for the tip, get the Quick tip app on your phone. It will solve your tip problem. As for the choice of date night resturant, your on your own.
