The Dixie/Brandon Hatton Conundrum

Featured Replies

This from another thread:

This may become the norm for Hatton because the word is that the Dixie coaching staff has decided that it's no longer going to be the Brandon show. Also herd from reliable source that the coaches dont want Hatton taking so many shots. Hatton is averaging 25.3 points a game on 15.5 shot attempts based off stats posted on nky.com. He is averaging 1.536 points per attempt. Dont exactly think I would want him to stop shooting so much if I was the coach.

For those that are now aware Dixie is very young this year with very little experience returning from last year outside of Hatton.

I know parents were complaining last year that Brandon was taking too many shots. Not sure if a)the above from HD is true and b)if so, is it a result of any parents complaining.

But let's eliminate that for a second.

You've got a stud scorer. 2000+ points and counting. You have no real offensive weapons outside of him.

Do you limit touches for Brandon in order for the youngsters to develop? Even if it's at the expense of W/L for this season? Or do you say "boys, if you want shots get open or rebound Brandon's misses because we're trying to win now?"

I don't believe it has to be one or the other. In games like tonight's, you give more time to the youngsters. In tighter affairs, you give Hatton the green light.

Maybe tonight's game got like it did as a result of the reported new policy? Maybe it's a tight game if BH takes his normal shots?

I think the game tonight was out of hand because Dixie is outclassed by Scott County (like a lot of other teams).

But to the more general point, I'm playing the way that is going to help me win, while also taking advantage of opportunities to develop other players. If Dixie is going to take an approach where you focus exclusively on developing the less experienced guys, that is the wrong plan.

You play to win the game. You use the weapons you have to your advantage to give you the best chance at winning. If you're not there to win, why play the game.

This is very interesting, basketball is a Team game and if you have a kid that can fill it up like Hatton then the rest of the Team needs to get him the ball and do the other things that help you win. There are other very important things involved in a game that play vital roles in helping teams win.

Alot of parents get upset When there little Johnny who LED his AAU team in scoring last summer isnt getting all the shots.

Bottom line IMO you play to win the game and if getting Hatton the ball each time down the floor gives you the best chance to score then so be it.

The kid has worked his butt off to get where he is and should be getting atleast 15-17 shots a game.

I don't see any reason other players can't develop just because Brandon is on the floor. He is by the far their best option and should get his looks.

Hard to believe they wouldn't run their offense through Hatton. That just doesn't make sense. He can absolutely carry this team and does at times. I also

can't believe a coach with Chevy's experience letting the parents determine what he does. They are a decent team and you can't throw a season away. The 9th region is not a sure thing for any team. Even though one of the top four will probably win it, Dixie will be in the regional tourney and with a good draw they could be right there at the end. Just sounds like they and Hatton had a bad game. It happens. Who thought they'd beat SC anyway?

Chicken--egg thing. Are the other players not any good, therefore, Hatton has to be the only one shooting? Or are there good players that have been conditioned to always get the ball to Hatton--or else?

It has been proven that when Hatton has help then Dixie will win. They've been to Rupp while Hatton has been playing haven't they? He just needs some help. He'd carry my squad until he graduates. Without question.

I'm a parent from Dixie and to my knowledge there are no parents complaining. And I don't think the coach has a problem with him shooting the majority of shots. I think the problem comes when there is no offense run. You can't come down the floor, make one pass to BH and have him put his head down and go one-on-five multiple times in a row. When there is a flow, with ball movement they look good. I personally would love to see BH average 30 points a game.

So, unless anyone has any proof that parents have been comp[laining to the coach and that he is listening to them, then please do not start rumors. Thanks.

I think Hatton is the best player in the 9th Region and what he has accomplished at the high school level is amazing. I have also had the opportunity to watch him on the AAU circuit and absolutely believe he is a D1 player. He gets buckets against high level competition.

Dixie was going to be very young this season and Hatton was going to have to be their #1 option most nights to have a chance to win. I think a lot of people overrated Dixies soph class ability to make the jump to varsity and be really good this season. I felt that next season after a year of playing at the varsity level would be Dixies best opportunity to compete for another regional title.

The other reality is that in today's society parents are going to complain unless their kid is the focal point. I don't think any of them would deny that Hatton is the best player but it is the nature of the beast. Parents are a lot more vested in their kids than back in the day.

Coach Chevy has invested a lot in BH making him the focal point of teams with other very good players. I would find it difficult to believe that he is going to choose this time to pull back the reins?

Let's be clear. We don't know that to be 100% true. No question some parents weren't/aren't happy but that doesn't mean Chevy reacted to them.

No parents complain to the coach, ennam. They do it from the stands and outside of the gym. I have proof that it occurred a lot last year.

Let me be clear. That's not unique to Brandon and Chev. It's at CCH as well. It's at a lot of schools with a high-scoring player.

The debate centers around what a coach does when he knows it's out there and he has young, undeveloped talent around the stud.

What parents have complained??? Again, unless you have proof that parents have complained to Ken and that Ken is listening to them (which I can't ever imagine he would do), then STOP spreading a rumor. I am a parent of one of the Sophs on that team and I am unaware of any parents complaining.
