The administration at Fairview High School did a terrible job in planning the championship night of the All A Classic. They had the girls and boys games in back-to-back fashion, even though their gym is the size of a grade school gym. As if that wasn't a bad enough decision, there were four different teams represented in the two games. As a result of this decision and assumption that the Rose Hill and Menifee County fans would just go ahead and leave after the first game, there were approximately 50 fans (many of them with 1 and 2 year old babies) that stood outside for over an hour only to be told that there just wasn't enough room for them in the gym and they might as well go home. Then to go ahead and make things even worse, the pricipal (who is generally known as the leader of a school) would not come out and make the announcement - he kept sending janitors and teachers out to battle the furious crowd.

The thing that is most disturbing is that people who had already purchased tickets were told that there just wasn't any place for them in the gym. They could stand in line for another half hour and get a $5.00 refund for their ticket, however. I guess that $5.00 was also supposed to cover the gas money for those that drove from over an hour away to watch Elliott County. My wife, 1-year old daughter, and I travelled about an hour and twenty minutes to watch this game only to be told that there just wasn't enough room in the gym. I asked why they thought it was a good idea to have the games back-to-back and the response was "we figured that the fans from the girls game would leave..." So basically, my family along with about 45 other people were shut out in the cold, wasted half a tank of gas, and wasted a Saturday night all because of poor planning.

If I were in charge of this school, I would have also asked myself what would've happened at this game if the building would have caught on fire. It was well over capacity (there were actually people standing around the edges of the court and in the hallways. I guess its not too big of a deal, however, as members of the fire department and police department were inside watching the game and didn't seem too worried about it either.

The Fairview team might have won the tournament but they blew it in hospitality and decision-making.

I was not there to witness the chaos, however I can tell you that the girl/boy doubleheader is something that all the schools in the region voted to go to several years back.

Sounds like they should have they games on different nights or tell the people from the other teams from the first game that they would have to leave since there was people outside standing you had already purchased tickets for the second game. Either somebody would have been upset but at least the people who traveled to the game would have gotten to see the game they came to see.

I was not aware that this was a tournament decision - I figured it was a school decision. This needs to be changed when a school with a tiny gym is hosting.

I'm curious what the posted capacity is at Fairview High School???

I was curious about that too, but I could never get in the door to see it. I could see from looking through the door that there were people everywhere. They were way over capacity that night, but I'm not sure what the capacity is.

Why don't the All A school's get together and decide to play the ALL A Regional tournament at MSU'S Weatherby Gymnasium? Why not use facilities that you have access to in the region and also obtain the "neutral" court atmosphere in a larger seating capacity.

A good solution would have been to have the games with about an hour and a half to two hours inbetween and made everyone clear the gym. If a person wanted to see both games they would have to buy a ticket to the second game. That would have caused many to go home.

I believe the 10th region All "A" schools voted to move the semi-finals and finals to the recently renovated Campbell County (CC is 4-A) Middle School Gym (one of the largest in the area) for the next five years, in an effort to meet the goals you're stating. I thought it was a good move at the time, and now it sounds even better!!

Boyd Co. Middle School or Paul G. Blazer would be a good place to host the tournament. The only question would be would those two schools be willing to let the tournament be played at those sites?

I spoke to someone on the inside at Fairview today and they said that if they had it to do over they would have had two sessions that day. I believe the turnout suprised them.

FWIW, there is no way that that gym seats 1100 people. Rose Hill's gym has 10 rows of bleachers that contain 1053 bleacher seats. Fairview's gym has 9 rows. Plus there is a section where the teams enter the lockrooms that is non existent. I would say closer to 900 to 950.

I was just going by what it said on the KHSAA site.

That gym does not hold 1100 people. If a larger gym could be found at a reasonable rental fee it should be done. However, as it stands, the schools rotate hosting the Class A. It was Fairview's turn and they probably did the best they could. No one expected the large Rose Hill crowd for the girl's game to stick around for the boy's game. It should have been anticipated because many thought it would be an exciting game. Those that had to leave should be happy. Fairview played extremely well and blew out an Elliott County team that suddenly became very selfish.

BGGreen your information is wrong. Since Brossart did not meet the 1000 seat minimum that the 10th region All "A" schools voted on they decided to move it to Campbell Co. Middle School instead of stepping out of the rotation. Next year the tournament will be at Bracken County. It is NOT going to be at the CCMS gym the next five years.

Rotation:

Brossart (CCMS) 2006

Bracken Co. 2007

Deming 2008

Nicholas Co. 2009

Paris 2010

IF Brossart gets to have a say in the rotation, then why dosen't Augusta and St. Pat get a say also?
