Who is gonna be the best in 3A next year?

Featured Replies

I agree with everything except the wide reciever spot. I think that is going to be a big question mark for the birds in the upcoming season. Other than the two tights, I am not sure if I can say that is one of the strengths this year.

Stein and Wise will be good TEs. I think Drew Simons will be successful at wideout. Max Little also will contribute. Look at our recievers from 05. Schisler and Petracco are seniors that stepped up when it was their time. I have no doubt that will be the case in 06.

Unfortunately, you are incorrect on several matters. He is still ineligible, but is contesting the KHSAA's decision. He currently is a junior and if he gets to play next year, it will be as senior. He was initially ineligible his freshman and sophomore years at Highlands because of the rule that if you repeat a grade, you are ineligible to play that year. Since Latin school considers their first two years to be the freshman and sophomore years, when he transferred to Highlands he "repeated" those two years. For those of you not in the know, you start Latin after the 6th grade and skip the 7th and 8th grades. Your first year there is as a freshman. Its a 4 year high school. Its not for the average intellect student. Anyway, Ledney spends two years there, doesn't participate one iota in sports and his family decides its not working and wants to enroll him in a traditional high school and chooses Highlands. Again, it was not for athletics. Heck the kid played no sports whatsoever at Latin. Under the KHSAA rules, he can't play the first two years at Highlands because in their interpretation he repeating the freshman and sophomore years. He appeals to the BOC of the KHSAA and they refuse to waive the rule, although they have the power to do so.

Which brings us to Vince's junior year. He's no longer repeating a grade so he doesn't have that rule to contend with. Unfortunately, there is also a rule that says you only have 4 years of high school eligibility (unless there is a medical problem forcing you to miss school). Well the KHSAA counts the two years at Latin as part of those 4 years, so those two years plus his freshman and sophomore years at Highlands (during which he was ineligible for reasons stated above) equal 4, so the KHSAA would not let Vince play this past year and he won't, unless he prevails in court, play next year. Again, the KHSAA had the opportunity to waive the rule but incredibly chose not to. Vince is of the same age as everyone else in his grade, did not play any sports at Latin so he has no advantage over his peers and he's only in this predicament because of the unusual nature of Latin. All of this was explained to the Board and all but a few basically said "tough noogies".

And yet, there are some people out there who believe the KHSAA doesn't enforce the rules. In my mind they should have waived the rule because Ledney is not violating the spirit or intent of the rule, but because of silly people ( a lot of whom are coaches, ADs and principals) who, without knowing the facts, go around constantly stating the KHSAA is not enforcing the rules, an attitude has developed at the KHSAA that looks at every transfer as wrong and every request for eligibilty as an opportunity to prevent a kid from playing instead of the other way around. As I said in another post defending the KHSAA, they are only human. I understand that. They are going to have flaws. And I think the decision making in re Ledney is a perfect example of one of those flaws. Hopefully it can be rectified by the courts because the KHSAA botched it big time.

Thanks for the info. I thought since Vince is working out in the weight room with the guys he was definately cleared to play this season. I would be willing to contribute to a legal fund to help this kid fight the KHSAA on this one. The board is proving once again they are not only human, but that for them, to err is a way of life.

Free Ledney!

Wise is moving into an interior line position.

Everyone has their opinion about the QB position...last time I check there is 11 men on the field at the same time. It takes a team to be successful not one player. Now unlike some people I am not going to take a shot at a kid because I thought he missed his assignment or did'nt make a great play everytime. I like to reflect on the positive things a player does and Chase had many positive moments as a player. It really does'nt matter what we think about who should play or not... the coaches decide.

I would like to say thanks to Chase and Chad for making each other better players.

Nice post NCB. We often forget about how our posts affect the kids, and trust me the kids read this site. I know nothing is posted maliciously, but before we post comments about who likes to get hit, who doesn't, who has a strong arm, who doesn't, we should step back and think how much we would like it if it was our son being commented on and how our son would feel if he was reading about his play on here.

As for Chase, admittedly he didn't do everything perfectly every play; then again, my son didn't block every play correctly either. They are high school kids doing the best that they can, playing positions that the coaches selected for them. Heck, I recently looked at the tape of the state championship game I played in: thank goodness that this site wasn't around back then. I stunk! Which was bad enough. But I'm glad I didn't have to read about it on here. And I do know this about Chase: he's a great young man and almost as important as that (I said almost) is the fact that we wouldn't have beaten CovCath without him. And at the end of the day, the only thing that comes close to winning state is beating CovCath!! (Sorry guys  ). And we did that this year. I'll support whomever Dale selects as the qb next year and hope we don't read a lot of second guessing about it on here. Nothing is more divisive for a team than that.

Sounds like from what I've read on here there will be a lot of other very talented teams next year trying to prevent the Birds from achieving what they have dreamed about since or before the 3rd grade: winning state. Think about that every conditioning session this off season. Its where championships are won.

Don't count Ashland out..I'm not saying they will win the state title but they very well could win their region! :dancingpa

Gotta get past Bell and Rock.

Who's got that tape??? Did you make a copy ?? I thought that bad boy was locked up like the Zagruder film of the 60's!! I'd love to see it....maybe!!

Leatherneck, If Ledney has 4 years of eligibility to use and has been ineligible these past 2 years, then would he not still have those 2 years of eligibility left to use? I know that sounds confusing but it seems to me he should still have 2 years of eligibility to play. Especially considering the kid has never played a season of any sport of any kind for any school. I have no idea what kind of football player he will be and neither does the anyone else. I would like to see him get a chance to show what he can do. I hear he squatted 405 lbs this afternoon. Wow!

LN posted 2 years at Latin and 2 years at HHS. You right it is confusing. Do the 2 years of ineligibilty at HHS as eligible years, leaving him none? Any way isn't he going to be a senior? So aren't we talking about 1 year? Let the kid play :ylsuper:

Thanx to my pal Tigertalker, he is sounding the alarm that BGHS and Hoptown will be all that once again in '06! And another point he has: 3A Region One could boil down to the final play. The Tigers have an impressive team coming back...but so do the Purples. Senior T Stuart Hines is an absolute stud and could be the finest lineman in the Commonwealth in '06. Senior HB Avery Hibbitt has already set the all-time scoring mark for a season and for a career at BGHS, and he will soon be the Purples' all-time leading ground gainer. 2005 may have seen the best two soph QBs in the same season for BGHS, and both Trent Steelman and Rondale McMillian turned in very good efforts last season. Defensively, we have two LBs who will be third-year starters in Chris Tucker and Tucker Jackson. Tucker hits a ton but is a little on the small side for a big college. However, he will play somewhere. Jackson is another story. He's under a microscope, and rightly so! Came up with some big plays for the Purples defense last season. And DB Ryan Beard stepped into the spotlight last season when he blocked two placements against St Xavier in The Rafferty's Bowl, a FG attempt and a PAT, both in the second half against a team who has made a huge reputation in special teams play. Ryan is a senior.

Many players saw bunches of action last season, and the cupboard's still full at BGHS. Coach Wallace will have an interesting spring to be sure, but it should be a GOOD interesting spring! :D

...and neither of us EVER overlooks Tilghman or Franklin-Simpson!!! ;):D

My comment about Chase not wanting to run the ball had more to do with Chase having a seperated shoulder. I'm not to sure how many kids could have play the whole year like he did with an injury like that. Not to many people knew about it either. Great career, 1 state championship, 1 runner-up while being Qb at HHS.

From the time your freshman year starts, you have 4 consecutive years - not 4 total years. There's a difference.

That would be correct cshs. In the eyes of the KHSAA, Ledney has no eligibility remaining. Period.
