Anyone wanting to start the new year off with a good work out here is one we did at my crossfit gym for Christmas. It's in the 12 days of Christmas theme.

12 Air Squats

11 Sit Ups

10 Wall Balls (20# men /14# women)

9 Burpees

8 KBS (53# men / 35# women)

7 Box Jumps (24" men / 20" women)

6 Deadlifts (115#/75#)

5 Hang Cleans (115#/75#)

4 Thrusters (115#/75#)

3 Step Lunges

2 Front Squats (115#/75#)

1 Mile Run (or 1600M row)

You start at 12 squats and add a movement every round. Adjust weight as needed.

Round 1 - 12 Squats

Round 2 - 12 Squats, 11 situps

Round 3 - 12 Squats, 11 situps, 10 Wall Balls

and so on.

I used to like my beer but I quit alcohol of any form 4 years ago. At that time I weighed 200, and I figured since I was cutting out beer I would get back down to about 175, where I should be. Well, it hasn't worked out that way. I've picked up about 30 pounds. At least when I drank beer I didn't eat like a horse. I never liked sweets, but now I crave sweets and snacks all the time. My New Years resolution is to watch my diet and walk 2 miles every day. Hopefully I can get back down to a size 36 pants instead of a 40. I'm 58 years old now and keeping the weight from my stomach is the hardest part. I guess my body doesn't burn up calories like it used to.

I am at a much different place in fitness than the rest of you, but I'll join in the conversation. During 2012 I lost 50 lbs by using the 17 Day Diet (a very healthy lifestyle change) and walking/hiking and some light work at the gym. Near the end of 2012, I underwent surgery and was diagnosed with endometrial (uterine) cancer after the fact. Since November, I had to reduce my physical activity and change my diet a bit. However, I didn't gain any weight, just didn't lose any more.

My goals for 2013 include continuing healthier eating and once I am healed more, get back into my walking/hiking regimine and to kick it up in the gym a little more. I'd like to walk in several events this year (do they do 10K walks or just 5?) I want to continue regaining a healthy lifestyle. It really is addictive and I want to get back at it. I am having to fight the urge to do too much at the moment.

Done very well last night with not giving in to all the food temptations.

Wow! What's a Burpee?

I'm looking to drop about 50 pounds. I've been reading a lot about what David Pollack (former UGA DE All-American, current ESPN football analyst for those of you thinking, "I know that name"). I'm actually the same size I was in high school and college, but would love to reach that goal.

I started working out (jogging/walking on the treadmill) back in the first of December to avoid gaining weight (bc I dang sure was going to eat and eat a lot). Because of that, I honestly didn't gain any weight over the break.

I finally have found the trick to conitinuing this cardio thing, these are all going to sound like excuses and some of them are, but the problems with:

1) Running on the road, was that the concrete just literally beat the crap out of me (I even got fitted for Brooks running shoes just for me)

2) The track (rubberized mind you) bored the absolute crap out of me. Felt like it took foooooorrrreevvver to do just a mile.

3) Treadmills, it seemed like time stood still.

So, the solution? I've been taking my ipad up to the gym, and covering up the time with it; all the while getting my cardio in and watching shows on Netflix and/or games through the "Watch ESPN" app. This way, an hour on the treadmill passes real fast, all to not looking down and seeing the time slllllloooooowwwllly tick away.

For what it's worth, I've stayed with this a month, which is by far the longest I've ever stayed with a cardio regiment outside of my college playing days.

I didn't mean to ramble, but thought I'd share an idea, bc I know I'm not the only one out there who probably struggled with pushing through with the cardio side of things.

Happy New Year everyone.

I would love nothing more than for there to be a cross fit gym in my area. Good stuff right there. Out of pure curiosity, do you mind me asking cost of a Crossfit gym membership?

^Thanks, Harry! Any ideas to get motivated and stay that way are appreciated!

You need to look into strength training.

I still do that. Not like I did when I was playing football in high school and college, though, obviously.

I have an uncle that is in tip top shape and never runs to get his cardio, does it all through lifting. I should probably do just that, though, you're right.

I lied though about this being the longest I've ever stuck with a running/walking Cardio regiment. I forgot about the winter/spring after my senior year of college football, I dropped the weights, and went totally walking/jogging and dang near got to the goal I'm aiming for now. I guess that's what still lingers with me as "the way"?

Cardio's fine. For me it's 3rd in priority.

1. Nutrition

2. Strength training

3. Cardio.

I'd be interested in the length of your cardio workouts. Mileage, minutes, days/week

Saw an hour. What is your intensity?

It's difficult for me with strength training due to not having a lot of room at my house and not having the time to go to the YMCA between work and our baby it's difficult to find the extra time. I'm trying to find other ideas that may work but haven't found one that I like yet.

I just think they key for some of our novices is to find a way to incorporate your cardio within your strength training. People hate time on the hamster wheel, but I always hate watching people lift a set then stand around for 2 minutes before their next lift. I stay on a timer with minimal rest to build cardio within my exercises. Get a lot more done and faster.
