Fitness Goals 2013 Edition

I'm going to give swimming a go sometime this week. My knees can only take so much treadmill time.

When I swam 4xs a week a few years ago, my cardio went through the roof. I've never had that running mile after mile. It must be due to some sort of oxygen deprivation. That is the only thing that I can think of b/c I wasn't swimming very far, like up to 26-30 lengths of the pool w/ breaks in between.

I broke my year down into 2 waves w/ each wave having 3 phases

Wave 1

Conditioning/Core

Strength

Leaning out for the summer

Wave 2

Conditioning

Strength

Powerlifting goals for the end of the year

We shall see how it goes. I also want to be able to swim 1/2 mile and continue to play indoor soccer w/out feeling like I'm going to have a heart attack.

Challenging 2150 in the pool this morning. Lots of sprints and breath work. Tennessee Tumblers are the worst.
What are those?

We did 2700 yards this morning.

900 wu (300 swim, 300 kick, 300 pull)

9x100 flutter kick (easy, medium, hard) on 1:45's

50 ez

800 pull (75 free/25 IM)

50 ez

Anywhere from 2800-4000 (or more) calories. I put on a few pounds over the past month, so I will try and alter what those existing calories are to lose weight. 500 calories of chocolate is not that same as 500 calories of a salad with grilled chicken on top.
Dang, I thought I took in a lot. I'm somewhere between 2800-3500. Usually closer to 3k. But I've been eating like crap for awhile really. What would a day's diet look like for you? I'm looking for ideas on things to try.

It's definitely helped though I think my best cardio was last winter/spring when I was really hammering out intervals. I just started back doing them a lot so I'm anxious to see how much better my cardio is with swimming AND run intervals.
It depends what you are trying to accomplish with the strength training. If building strength is the goal then lift big and take as much rest as needed. You shouldn't try to specifically get a cardio workout with your strength training. Mark Rippetoe wrote a great article about strength training versus conditioning for beginners. I'll see if I can find and post a link.

This is the article I was talking about. For those who don't know who Mark Rippetoe is he wrote what is considered by most to be the bible on strength training.http://www.t-nation.com/free_online_article/most_recent/conditioning_is_a_sham

Wednesday's are usually my off days from lifting and crossfit. I'm thinking about adding Wednesday as a swim day.

Did you see better results than normal cardio? I just need something to mix it up. The fact that it's less taxing on the body makes it even better.

I don't know about running miles, but when I swam, I felt a lot better playing pick up basketball. That's what I cared about, being able to sprint and recover.

You swim free style down to the flag, then swim underwater to the wall, kickoff wall and come up for breath at the flag. Flag-wall-flag is pretty challenging. This morning we went from the T on the bottom of the pool-wall-flag.

To me it just helps regulate your breathing in all aspect of fitness.

I will say if you have never had any formal swim instruction, you need to do so before taking up swimming so that you are doing it remotely correct and not wasting energy.

I did as a kid. I would guess I'm an average swimmer. I will likely just swim laps at a moderate pace to see how it goes and how much I can do.

Sounds pretty rough. We do a lot of breathing drills too. Breath every 3, 5, 7, 9...

Totally agree. I was doing a lot of things wrong/wasting energy before joing the masters swim group. It's also harder to unlearn those things if you continue to practice them.

Besides our Tennessee Tumblers today, our other breath work was 5 x 150 (breathe every 7, 5, and 3 by each 50).
