January 1, 201313 yr Cardio's fine. For me it's 3rd in priority. 1. Nutrition 2. Strength training 3. Cardio. I'd be interested in the length of your cardio workouts. Mileage, minutes, days/week I just started a month ago with the cardio. I haven't lost, but I haven't gained either and I (like most) have eaten like hell the past four weeks, especially on weekends due to birthdays, Christmas parties, etc. But....I've been going 3-4 times a week for anywhere from 45 mins to an hour and 20. 3-5 miles depending on the time, etc. When I say I've eaten bad, I mean....I've eaten HORRIBLE. I started doing this the 1st of December solely to counter the ridiculous number of calories I knew I was going to take in. I bet we've eaten out or had some sort of "party" half of the days this month. My wife is a health freak, though. In 8 years, I haven't seen her ever eat a hot dog or hamburger.
January 1, 201313 yr If you want to be humbled, I suggest some of you give swimming a shot. People think it is easy but it can be a challenge; great core/strength/cardio all rolled in to one.

If its available in the area I'd also suggest giving a Masters Swim group a try.
January 1, 201313 yr Also, for people interested in losing weight I'd suggest giving run intervals a try. Besides shedding the pounds, It will really help your cardio/run strength.
January 1, 201313 yr I would love nothing more than for there to be a cross fit gym in my area. Good stuff right there. Out of pure curiosity, do you mind me asking cost of a Crossfit gym membership? I've seen them range from $40 a month to over $200. Mine is $85 a month with a one year commitment and worth every penny. However we have awesome trainers and some great members. If it weren't for our trainers it wouldn't be worth it.

January 1, 201313 yr I saw this group on Facebook called "December Squatathon", where it told you how many squats to do each day. Then everyone checked back in to say they did them that day. Thought something like that could be a neat thing for the BGP rookies, but could include squats, burpees, etc.
January 1, 201313 yr I just think they key for some of our novices is to find a way to incorporate your cardio within your strength training. People hate time on the hamster wheel, but I always hate watching people lift a set then stand around for 2 minutes before their next lift. I stay on a timer with minimal rest to build cardio within my exercises. Get a lot more done and faster. It depends what you are trying to accomplish with the strength training. If building strength is the goal then lift big and take as much rest as needed. You shouldn't try to specifically get a cardio workout with your strength training. Mark Rippetoe wrote a great article about strength training versus conditioning for beginners. I'll see if I can find and post a link.

Nothing worse then doing the same thing everyday.

Do farts count?

Just started swimming about 3 weeks ago. Went in the first time with the intention of doing 20 laps. I did 8 and was exhausted. Have gotten considerably better since.
