Assault Weapons - Issues - United States Senator Dianne Feinstein

Following is a summary of the 2013 legislation:

Bans the sale, transfer, importation, or manufacturing of:

120 specifically-named firearms

Certain other semiautomatic rifles, handguns, shotguns that can accept a detachable magazine and have one military characteristic

Semiautomatic rifles and handguns with a fixed magazine that can accept more than 10 rounds

Strengthens the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban and various state bans by:

Moving from a 2-characteristic test to a 1-characteristic test

Eliminating the easy-to-remove bayonet mounts and flash suppressors from the characteristics test

Banning firearms with “thumbhole stocks” and “bullet buttons” to address attempts to “work around” prior bans

Bans large-capacity ammunition feeding devices capable of accepting more than 10 rounds.

Protects legitimate hunters and the rights of existing gun owners by:

Grandfathering weapons legally possessed on the date of enactment

Exempting over 900 specifically-named weapons used for hunting or sporting purposes and

Exempting antique, manually-operated, and permanently disabled weapons

Requires that grandfathered weapons be registered under the National Firearms Act, to include:

Background check of owner and any transferee;

Type and serial number of the firearm;

Positive identification, including photograph and fingerprint;

Certification from local law enforcement of identity and that possession would not violate State or local law; and

Dedicated funding for ATF to implement registration

She wants people to register guns now. NFA guns require a $200 tax stamp for EVERYONE you own.

I don't own a gun yet and I am against gun control but I do understand and accept that some kind of gun control will happen in the near future.

That being said, isn't this a bit much?

Maybe Harry Reid will help add sanity. (yes, a nice word about Harry Reid)

2010 opening of shooting range in Nevada.

Harry and the NRA head at the same event. Notice Reid's comments early on - "I carried a gun everywhere I went."

Here you go.

A leftist gun enthusiast view of gun legislation.

Why Not Renew the “Assault Weapons” Ban? Well, I’ll Tell You… « Kontradictions

"It’s not easy being a leftist who loves guns. It’s like being a Republican who listens to NPR or supports single payer health care. But being a leftist, I get exposed to all the liberal publications and media that invariably call for gun control every time someone does something stupid with one. Being a gun enthusiast, I also get exposed to the political Right’s oversimplification of those liberals as somehow lacking moral fiber or true appreciation of freedom. Rather than agreeing with both, I tend to end up arguing with both. It’s exhausting to always feel like I’m apologizing for the other “side”."

Get them while you can PP, get them while the gettin is good.

Are they coming after your legal guns?

Are they coming after your legal guns?

In essence yes. My understanding is guns that are purchased legally before most of these bans go in to effect will be grandfathered in. So if they were legal when you bought them then they will still be legal for you to own. Moving forward you wouldn't be able to legally purchase such a weapon. Now I don't think this ban has a chance of passing, if any thing Feinstein may be helping to stimulate the economy one gun sale at a time.

All my guns are legal.

Yes. She now wants a registry.

Registry is the first small step towards taking guns later. Need to know where they are at first. Again all this effects is lawful guns owners, criminals will still have guns and will not register them.

FWIW I think National Gun Registry would be against the law, but that's just my opinion.

I will deny I own any guns and keep what I have unregistered and hidden

Yes. Then after the next one they will say "Turn in all your guns".....slippery slope.

FWIW ANY politician that brings this up and votes "Yes" should be brought up on charges of treason.....never happen though.

For those like me who are not gun intelligent what is the downside to the particulars of her proposal?

What is the downside to a registry?

Tell me about the other parts.

Once again what happens when another shooting happens? If the ban doesn't stop shootings(It won't) then the next step is confiscating all the ones currently "grandfathered" in.

It will make all .17 cal rifles illegal...no more than a BB gun.

It goes after some hunting guns as well, like those with a pistol grip.

We have enough gun laws.

I don't buy the "they will eventually take our guns" argument.

I don't buy the "they will eventually take our guns" argument.

I don't either. For starters, it would be nearly impossible to do so both passing and in coordinating and enforcing the legislation. I still find myself straddling both sides of the fence on this issue. I believe in our rights to own guns and the need to legislate them (although there is already A LOT of gun laws, none of which seem to be very effective). I'm just tired of listening to the extremes on BOTH sides which are just completely irrational, and seem to be doing the most talking.
