Everyday I am completely dumbfounded by intelligent, articulate people on here who say politicians will not do something when the politician has ACTUALLY SAID THEY would do it.......mind boggling.

 

And part of those words were she didn't have the votes. And since 1995 (in 2008),the Supreme court has ruled that the 2nd Amendment does cover an individual's right to own guns and be not connected to a militia, thus requiring either an overturn to that ruling, or a constitutional amemdment (also unlikely) for a complete ban and confiscation of guns. Those votes will never happen. Feinstein is one of extremists I mentioned before that I'm tired of listening to (and the other side has just as many, vocal extremists). Unless we stop listening to the far right and far left, real debate and compromise and ultimately solutions, will never take place.

My concern is the $200 tax stamp on guns owned.

See, this is the problem with our politicians when it comes to these bans, they're intentionally mislabeling these weapons as "assault weapons". Repeat something often enough to force it to sink in for the uninformed. Disingenuous, conniving, thieving, crooks and liars....and they keep getting voted in....

Labels notwithstanding...PepRock, RTS, Jumper_Dad...would you guys be opposed to laws requiring background checks and classes similar to those for concealed carry permits in order to own the types of guns listed above?

 

My perspective on this is one of a hunter, recreational shooter, and gun enthusiast (I'm pretty sure you guys all know that) who sees a problem that needs to be addressed.

I think it could reduce the ease to get those guns listed above. Were classes and background checks like that in place, would James Holmes have had his guns for the Aurora shooting? Would Jared Loughner have had his 33 round magazine? I'm not sure...but it would be another step in preventing the possibility for tragedies like that.

Correct. But Lanza and the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting is one of many. I realize that in many cases, criminals and sick people will find a way. I'm just looking at the fact that these shootings are occurring with more and more frequency, and taking the perspective that something needs to be done. So classes and background checks wouldn't have likely changed anything in the situation of Lanza...but what of Loughner and Holmes?

I believe both were under mental treatment. Both also selected 'gun free' zones for targets.

I have no problem with it. As long as it does not price them out of the hands of average Americans.

 

But I don't know that it would help in a case like Sandy Hook. He after all killed his mother then took her legally owned guns.
