One problem that I would have is that by going through the classes and getting documented to own those guns your name would be on a national registry as a owner of these types of guns. I am against a national registry of guns.

I think it could reduce the ease to get those guns listed above. Were classes and background checks like that in place, would James Holmes have had his guns for the Aurora shooting? Would Jared Loughner have had his 33 round magazine? I'm not sure...but it would be another step in preventing the possibility for tragedies like that.

 

You might be right, but will that actually make my students (and myself) safer? The Virginia Tech shooter used only handguns. What should I do to protect my students if a shooter comes in with handguns and multiple clips?

 

I want to be reasonable. I really do. I just don't see how this will truly make our schools safer. I don't want my students and I to be sitting ducks with no real chance to defend ourselves.

What if ownership of assault weapons required the same kind of background checks and classes as concealed carry?

 

Would that mean that in order to keep my AR-15 that I've had for 2 years I'd now have to pay a couple hundred dollars to go take a class similar to the one I took for my concealed carry permit? Or do I get a pass? IMO what you're talking about, it's all about the money, guns are expensive enough as is, start adding this and it's a form of discouraging gun ownership. Just not right in my mind. Unless said classes are free.

Yes, of course they can be used as legitimate hunting rifles. You can also use a flame thrower to light a cigarette. If you think about it, a hand grenade will signal the end of recess. Need to cut some butter, just pull out the trusty old chain saw.
