Thinking that Obama won because "people want stuff" is misguided.

 

4 states on Tuesday voted for marriage equality. Are gays Santa Claus, too?

 

Republicans have a serious problem with three demographics, and it's getting worse: women, minorities, and the youth. The minority vote isn't just Latinos, either. Romney got stomped among Asians as well, which is a minority growing even faster than Latinos.

 

Women were turned out nationwide because of the social agenda of the Republican party. The emphasis on birth control as a culture war issue against Obamacare was a serious concern to women, who saw issues that they thought were settled decades ago on the front page.

 

The culture war issues are also the same ones that have delivered my generation to the Democratic column. Not me, obviously, but my more centrist peers? Oh yeah. Voters under 30 are turned off by the Republican positions on gay rights, reproductive rights (not even talking about abortion, I mean contraception and sex education) and, yes, marijuana prohibition. The views are seen as retrograde.

 

I mean, Al Mohler was on NPR today saying these same things, that the evangelical message was rejected by the voters in this election and some reflection was maybe in order, although he clearly meant that stances on other issues like the role of government and immigration should be softened in order to enlarge the tent so that candidates who champion the social issues might prevail. If those issues aren't the most impant to other conservatives, maybe they reach the conclusion that social issues should be moderated so that fiscal policy might be the centerpole of a bigger Republican tent. But coming to the conclusion that "the takers" have won is sticking your head in the sand about the nature of your electoral coalition versus the electorate at lagre.

The last generation to really have to fight for anything is in their 50's and 60's. White, black, whatever you are, almost everything has been given to us since the early 70's.

 

Every kid, from every race, thinks they should have Iphones, 22" rims on $35k cars and their parents literally bet the farm, "family house over mortgaged", that they could and would give it to them.

 

No personal responsibility anywhere anymore.

I'm a 28 year old with a degree; my own business; a car and home I own and pay the payments on myself. I come from a background where my parents had to struggle to provide for us and, yes, needed some assistance from Uncle Sam at times. I have a son, a mortgage and quarterly taxes.

 

So to say that I don't know what it's like to struggle, to say I know nothing of personal responsibility? That my vote for Obama is a vote for a handout? I find that offensive.

And I'm sure you're no more offended then I am by the implication that because I am conservative that I must be a mysogynistic, racist, homo/xenophobe.

My point was toward the rhetoric of prominent Republican officals. The point which offended me was a blanket qualification of young Obama voters. Do you not see a difference?

With all the talk of a war on women, round-ups of dark skinned people, and the hatred of gays that has and continues to be attributed to conservatives by the "open minded" people of the left to be honest no I don't see a difference. And I have to say I do believe that a whole lot af people voted for Obama because they thought they were going to get freebies...birth control, Pell Grants, medical insurance etc.

You guys have hit your collective heads if you think that people wanting stuff wasn't a major factor in this election. Obamacare is a prime example. I'm not saying it's the only reason, a country that has distanced themselves from God and a black population that would vote for just about any black canidate are others. Before anyone gets all upset about the black comment let's remember Jessie Jackson's son won re-election and he is under treatement for being bi-polar and investigation from the Department of Justice for campaign finance fraud.

How can Rebublicans claim that Obamacare is unpopular and against the will of the country and at the same time is why Obama was reelected? It can't be both.

I find it particularly hilarious that the conservatives keep saying over and over that 'the people who want things for nothing' won the election but in reality they're mad because the people who 'will give them what they want for nothing' lost. Funny how that works out.

I find it funny that Romney was "shellshocked". Come on, we all knew this was going to be a close election. Pres. Obama wrote two speeches because he knew that it could have went either way. Why wouldn't Romney think the same? Was he that arrogant and overconfident to think otherwise? If he was really "shellshocked" then all his transmitters must not be transmitting! Obama out-worked him and spent less. Money doesn't always talk!! Sorry about your luck Mitt!!

You, along with all the other Reps. who have complained about the blacks voting for a black, do realize that the black vote has ALWAYS GONE TO THE DEMOCRATS? Please tell me that you WERE aware of this? Yes, maybe having a black male run for office increased their turnout numbers, but the black community has ALWAYS supported the Dems. Their vote this election and the last election should be of no surprise to you or any other Republican, and no not because Obama is black, but BECAUSE HE IS A DEMOCRAT!

 

I am almost under the assumption that it goes wayyyyyyyyy beyond the fact that Reps. are not in touch with reality. I think they refuse to accept how things are, and how they are becoming. If you want to go back to the mid 1800's take a trip down to Oxford, Mississippi and shout "The South Will Rise Again" will everyone down there. I am dumbfounded at how ignorant some people continue to be.
