The reason I am asking is that there was an article in the C-J today in which Randy Sanders is quoted (paraphrasing) as saying that Max Smith is far and away their best QB. Perhaps the new coach will see things differently. Perhaps both PT and Jalen Whitlow will improve dramatically. Otherwise, the implication is that PT and JW will not see much time if Smith is healthy. (The article said he has been throwing some.) I'm a huge PT fan. However, I've been telling people for some time now that he's not better than Max Smith. It's Max's job to lose next season. He has performed well this year when healthy. That could have an impact on Pat.

I mean heck, he felt that Smith was the best QB before the season began and Smith did well in the few games he played. So unless Whitlow and Towles played fantastically well during the games they were in, why would Sanders' think differently? Is it realistic to think that given the fact that Whitlow and Towles got limited snaps during summer camp (and in the case of Towles got zero snaps with the UK O until he got pressed into service) that either one of them would do fantastically well once inserted into the game. I still think Sanders and/or Phillips made a bone headed decision to allow Newton to compete for the starting QB spot during summer camp. Newton should have been moved to another position (slot receiver?). If he was able to do it well enough, we'd have had another senior on the field, plus it would have allowed Whitlow and Towles to get more snaps, which would have helped prepare them. Furthermore, if Sanders had said that either Whitlow and/or Towles was going to be the best returning QB, wouldn't that have meant that Sanders made a big mistake going with Smith as the starter at the beginning of the season? Seems so to me and my guess is that Sanders wouldn't want to admit that. I'm not all that disappointed to see Sanders leave. Never thought his chunk and dunk offense was going to work in the SEC even if Smith had remained healthy. As Jeff Picorello (sp?) stated over the air on several occassions, UK must throw the deep regularly to help spread out the D, in order to create room for shorter passes and help the running game. If the safeties and corners don't have to worry about the deep ball, it makes it much tougher to run the ball. LBers can focus on stopping the run because they know the safeties are playing up and can stop the short to medium passing game. Much harder to run wide as the corners play press coverage. I agree with him. SEC LBers and DBs are too talented if you don't stretch the field, and to be completely honest, we don't have talented enough receivers that can gain separation if the DBs aren't concerned about the deep pass. Mumme figured that out years ago, which is why he benched a very successful chunk and dunk QB in Bonner and went with Lorenzen. Seems like Sanders never figured that out. Hopefully our next OC is smarter.

However, Jones still has feelers out there. I have also heard that Barnhart has his guy. Next weekend could be announcement date. Could this all be a smokescreen?

November 21, 201213 yr Dale Mueller. Jackpot as long as he can beat EKU, WKU and UL which looks to be UK's biggest competition for state championships over the next few years.
