We are conceding excellence for participation. High School sports are for the kids, and not us as fans. And as such, I'm ok with that.

Size of a high school does not matter. What percentage of kids start a sport as a Freshman or Sophmore? Not many. What matters is the feeder programs and a coaches ability to manage or influence those programs. Scott County has about 700 kids in its feeder program at any one time and it has been this way for a few years. This is the reason you have seen an improvement in SC play. Its not how big SC is at the Highschool level, we have always been big but not consistant.

 

 

Imagine if Boone or Kenton County still had only one High School? Furthermore, imagine if we did not have Cov Cath and Beechwood down the street from us? When there is no competition for talent, enrollment size becomes more significant.

Enrollment is the only thing that matters if your school has less than 11 boys in it.

What do you mean when you say ... Similar to Boone County and how they tappered off? Boone County has never won a State Championship so there has been no tapering off.

 

Now what has happened, through the late 90's and early 2000's Boone county was the states fastest growing county. Now this meant new schools were needed to handle the amount of students in the county. But that didn't cause boone county hs to taper off, what it did however was bring more athletes into the county. With that said, yes I could form an outstanding team that could beat just about anybody in the state if I could form a single team with just boone county resident school kids. The fact of the matter is that Boone county has too many students to have just 1 HS and therefor had to build additional schools.

 

Sure through the 70's and 80's there were only 2 schools (Boone and Conner) but there also wasn't a need for additional schools because the majority of the county at the time was farm land.

 

With the population boom in the county new schools were added (Ryle, Cooper) plus you have St Henry also. So there actually was no tapering off from Boone County HS, the county just has more talent within their boundaries now than they had in the past.

So the answer to the question is yes, no, maybe, a little bit.

That is true, but a lot of it has to do with the location of the cities. Kenton has Ft Mitchell which has Beechwood. Covington is probably the largest city which has only 2 Holy Cross and Holmes, and only 1 of them is public. SK, Scott and Dixie are pretty spread apart.

 

Boone county has 5 public schools (including Walton Verona which I meant instead of St Henry) 3 all within 5 miles from eachother and the 4th puts them all within a 10 mile radius. So yes Kenton has more schools, but as far as the vicinity of the public schools they are pretty spread out. You are right about St Henry, don't even know why i included them....brain fart. I meant Walton Verona which is in Boone county. so that is 5 public schools in the county compared to 5 public schools in Kenton.
