Do you have facts on the enrollment from that time? Why did they decide to move down to 1A in 1995?

No I do not have enrollment figures but it was always a source of pride here that was often brought up. I once ask why we moved down and was not given a straight answer which has always made me wonder if we did it because we seemingly could not seem to get past Danville at the time. If that was why, no one here was willing to own up to it but I have always wondered if that played into it granted almost all those Mf-Dan games were close and we could have won them

My original point was , and still is, if Bellevue is #10 then Class A is weak overall.

Which is really the beauty of six classes. It makes the road to the state title easier for the top programs and for those beyond the top 4-6 in a class it gives them an inflated sense of how good they really are. Wow that was harsh.

The discussion of challenges moves ahead to 3rd and 4th round playoff games, dreams of state championships and glory days debates. The funny thing about this thread is I wasn't even thinking about comparing Beechwood, Mayfield, Hazard and Frankfort when I put my list together. I was trying to find out who the next 6 were in the top ten.

My top 3 would be

 

1. Mayfield and Hazard

 

3.Beechwood

 

Why? Because since 2008 Beechwood has only beaten 2 or 3 teams that they were underdogs or even against. If Beechwood was a stock they would on a downward trend and a sell.

 

Mayfield and Hazard have both won more games where they were considered underdogs or the outcome was not assured before they played than Beechwood.

 

Beechwood is at the point where they only win the games that you know they going to win. Beechwood is a fine program and they will surely turn things around but lets not fool ourselves and say they are the best program in 1A. They have been but 2008 is long gone and they are stuck in mediocrity.

 

 

Who have Mayfield and Hazard beaten in the last 5 years that they were underdogs against? Heck, who have they been underdogs against? I am having a hard time thinking of more than 2 or 3 they were underdogs against, let alone 2 or 3 times they won as the underdog. I'm not really sure these are even the Top 4 programs. Yes, Beechwood, Mayfield and Hazard would have to be on there based on the 2006 reclassification period and # of times in the championship, but, not sure about Frankfort. Holy Cross has pretty much been knocked out in the same round as Frankfort every year. HC by Mayfield and Frankfort by Beechwood and they've had several teams with 10-0, 9-1, 8-2 records during that period of time and have beaten some quality teams in higher classes during that stretch. This year is certainly no reflection because Frankfort is definately the stronger team, but, I'd argue that HCross could make a strong case for #4. I would bet that they've been ranked higher than Frankfort alot more weeks than Frankforts been ranked ahead of them during the last 6 years.

 

You could probably argue Pikeville, as well. They typically make the Regional finals and have had several Final 4 appearances during this same stretch. Also, they're a team that plays a very tough non-district schedule, so, there record may not reflect as well as some others, but, imo, that should somewhat be considered in the conversation.

As I did the research, my opinion increased more for Pikeville than any of the top 10. Their program the last 5 years is much better than I realized. As to Holy Cross, very good the last two years (11-2 in both) but over 5 years I felt Frankfort is better.

It may be the area that I am from, but when I think of great 1A programs (without the benefit of numbers) Pikeville is one the teams that instantly comes to mind. I know this is out of the scope of time that we are speaking of, but in the 80's and 90's Pikeville was pretty darn good. And, most years they are easily in the top 10 teams in 1A. I know they are having some trouble this year, but that is very uncharacteristic of them.
