I can't believe that anyone from Ky would support a president that wants nothing more than to destroy our states product. Our coal industry is suffering. I hope the next time you turn on a light in your home you seriously stop and think why you are able to flip that switch and the room lights up. Sure, Obama wants the lights on in every living room (I think) but he wants it to all come from the government. He wants the government to control the energy and they will decide what the price will be and there will no longer be free enterprise where companies can compete for energy contracts at a decent price. Therefore the government will decide the price , which will be huge , and the individual proprietor will be left with nothing. Competition amoung companies means better pricing for everyone.

 

Check out the gas prices. They are higher than ever. Because of Obama, he has shut off off shore drilling. There is zero oil exploration in this country other than that on private land. Not near enough to take care of the US. They need to open up the offshore drilling and the pipeline to Canada. All for the individual drill , but there needs to be more.

It is also very difficult to get a permit this day and age.

I think everyone knows that the coal industry comes and goes in spurts.

 

I honestly am not sure where I stand on it. I'm glad it provides many people in EKY with jobs, but it also absolutely destroys the land there and the people (black lung disease). My thing is, if anyone wants to take coal away from KY, YOU HAVE TO PUT SOMETHING IN ITS PLACE. EKY doesn't have a bevy of manufacturing jobs that I am aware of, and the only public school in the area is in Morehead. Best think I believe that area could do is make Cumberlands and Pikeville College public institutions so that people in that area can afford an education, and with that I believe some kind of industry could prosper there.

 

Again, this is just my two cents. My family is from Paintsville, and owned land around Clintwood, VA that was used for mining. However, both parents agreed that it would be best to move from the area because of the lack of opportunity. Right now coal is all those people have, and I understand the want and need for it. However, I think it can be replaced, but the person in charge has to have a genuine concern for the people in the area so they are not left out in the cold.

Oil production in the US is actually nearing a 40 year high. Gulf of Mexico drilling is way up. The number of producing wells is nearing an all time high. If there were ever proof that we are in a world economy and gas prices are beyond our control, current oil production proves it. Despite increasing production and reduced demand in the US, prices at the gas pump go up.

So its the MACT rules that went into effect December 2011 that will kill a lot of current coal plants.

I don't have a link but know a lot of people that work in or own coal mining operations. One independent owner that I'm good friends with has reduced his operation from 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to 8 hours a day, 4 days a week.

Went on to say that the US could be completely energy independent for the next 200 years.

 

I realize this is weak information and apologize for not catching his name but the Red's game was getting ready to start so I had to make a quick decision.

The actions of the EPA are just the follow through of a plan that was originally part of Cap&Trade. Cap&Trade is just a parallel financial system where the politically connected would have made money in this derivative style 'market'. Cap&Trade is not dead, just on-hold. The EPA actions are the stop gap.

Most estimates of oil shale put reserves at over 1 trillion. But from what I have read it is expensive to extract under current technology. It's a catch 22, no one will invest in the technology until it becomes cost effective to do so and it won't become cost effective until someone invests in the technology.
