Do any other Beechwood fans remember our sideline a couple years ago when we played Highlands? Our boys went all out and our Sideline looked like a MASH unit. I guarantee the Beechwood Trainer remembers that game.

 

Parents of great Beechwood Freshman teams quite often push reality aside in their assessments. This may very well be the best Beechwood Freshman team ever. It certainly doesn't automatically translate to a great Varsity team two or three years later.

They are a top 3 team in this state, at any class. The comments above about the bw parent, call me skeptical. None of this class is leaving, even the newcomers are tight knit. All I'm excited about is the potential to beat the Mayfields and Frankfort.

Not sure if that is directed at me or not, but I'm in total agreement with you. I can't think of any good player Beechwood has lost after coming to Beechwood as a High Schooler. As you stated, they become too much a part of the fabric and they are very tight-knit group indeed.

First, please understand I am not negative about this. I love how all these Freshman play. There are some great athletes and great kids on that team. I am very excited about the future. Hell, I'm pretty excited about this year.

I think that frosh team was comprised of the just graduated seniors plus a few current seniors like Nussbaum.

No one can predict the future, but this group of kids for Beechwood are very special. There are a lot of pieces to the puzzle in that class.

I believe that Nussbaum and Erdman were still playing Spartans as 8th Graders.

OSD is right. I am pretty sure none of this year's seniors played on that freshman team in 2008. That was a big class at Beechwood and the freshman team was all freshmen if I recall correctly. And last year's team was almost 100% seniors on the field from that big class, with just 2 or 3 underclassmen getting playing time with the 1's.

 

As to the comment in an earlier post by someone about playing Highlands in 3 years, as others have pointed out ... look at what happened with the 2008 freshman team. They did play Highlands as sophomores and juniors and the games were never in doubt for Highlands. The difference is this. Beechwood is a 1A school. They get a "great" freshman class every 3 years. Highlands is 4A and has a great freshman class every year. Those numbers add up when you get to varsity. Last year's seniors would have been fun to watch versus Highlands and it would have likely been the closest Beechwood would have come since the 90's to beating Highlands, but I don't see that team beating Highlands. Just being honest Tiger fans.

 

People may say this is two "great" freshman classes in a row for Beechwood, but if you look at last year's freshman team, all the skill players on this year's team were key players on last year's team as 8th graders. So last year's freshman team is really 2 classes meshed together, which is not the case at Highlands and other bigger schools. Their freshman team is freshmen - not freshmen plus really good 8th graders. The numbers make a difference.

 

That was a great win for Beechwood last night but keep it real people. Enjoy it and enjoy the season. It will be fun memories. But if you want to win state titles, get in the weight room and get the most out of your talent because nothing comes to you just because of talent as you move to varsity football. You have to outwork the other guys, hope everyone stays healthy and yes, you need a little luck too.

Here is your game report:

 

Highlands received the opening kickoff and picked up a couple first downs on their opening drive before being stopped on 4th down at the Beechwood 30. The Tigers came right back and picked up yards in pretty good chunks. Ethan Stringer went 23 yards on a nice run for the TD. The extra point by German made it 7-0 Tigers, 2:53 to go. Highlands was 3 and out on their next drive. Beechwood started on the 50 and the quarter ended with BW leading 7-0.

 

Second Quarter - Beechwood converted on a 4th down play at the 30. Then QB Kyle Fieger hit WR Brett Slusher with a 22 yard TD pass. The XP was no good. BW13 HHS 0 with 8:33 to go in the half. Highlands picked up one 1st down then punted. On Beechwood's first play from the 27, Stringer fumbled and Highlands recovered. A face mask penalty aided the Highlands drive and the Bluebirds QB Kreeger scored on a 4 yard run to get the Birds on the board. The XP by Dougherty made it 13-7 with 3:46 left. Beechwood started moving down field again but Cody Stamper intercepted a Fieger pass at the 25 and returned it all the way to the BW 31. The Birds could not take advantage as the Tigers held on downs. Stringer then took the momentum back for the Tigers with a 63 yard TD run, just 29 seconds left in the half. The 2 point try was no good and the Tigers led 19-7 at the half.

 

The 3rd quarter saw the Tigers opening second half drive end with their first punt of the game. The Birds could not get anything going and punted it back after one 1st down. Beechwood then started moving the ball. Fieger found Slusher on a slant pattern, hit him in stride and Slusher dragged a Bluebird into the end zone for the score from 41 yards out. Stringer went around left end for the 2 point conversion. 1:05 to go, BW 27 HHS 7. Highlands tried to get back into the game but Cottingham intercepted a pass at the 23. Stringer took the first play 77 yards for a TD with 36 seconds left in the quarter. German's XP made it 34-7 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

 

The 4th quarter saw a long drive by Highlands with Kreeger scoring on a 3 yard run with 3:55 to go. The XP kick was no good. 34-13. The Birds tried an onsides kick but the Tigers recovered. The first team ran one play and then were subbed for en masse, jogging off to cheers from the Tiger fans. The game ended with the score Beechwood 34 Highlands 13.

Since I was not there, would it have been competitive in the 2nd half if HHS scores after the interception in 2Q? Summary says HHS started drive at BW 31. Followed by a 63 yd. TD run with 29 seconds left in the half, seems like it could easily have been tied or a 1 point game at half if HHS converts on the TO.

 

Good to see these 2 strong programs playing each other at any level. You only get better when you are tested.
