So Does NBC Deserve Some Flack Over This?

Featured Replies

Here is a question. If you were watching last night, did you notice this commercial and/or have any racial thoughts?

I was watching and it never crossed my mind. I am not sure if I should consider that a good sign that I have no racist thoughts or a bad sign that I am racially insensitive.

I was watching it...and honestly it did cross my mind, but my thought was pretty simply "geeze...bad timing for that commercial".

Since girl gymnasts do perform on the rings, there is no controversy. However, if the monkey did a vault or floor routine...

Seriously, I watched the program last night and saw this clip. Never once did I think anything of it. The thought of some people to make this a controversial issue amazes me.

I didn't even think twice about it. So whatever it says about you, it says the same about me!

I guess a better question for those who thought it was in poor taste, how long after was NBC supposed to wait before showing this commercial again? Why would it not be racially insensitive at any time?

I showed the clip to a 40 something year old black male and he didn't want to see anymore as soon as the monkey hands popped up.

Everyone's perspective is different.

Incredibly bad timing. Not a good look.

I laughed though. I'm laughing now. And so did my 37 year old black friend.

Everybody is different and to be honest I know for a fact if my black friend and I who thought it was funny worked at NBC we probably would have asked to air the commercial at a different time. Immediately after a Gabby Douglas segment you air a monkey doing gymnastics? Gotta be smarter than that.

And obviously I cannot relate since I am not black. But from my perspective we are never going to get anywhere with racial divides and tolerance if people search for ways to be offended at everything.

I laughed when I saw it in this thread but probably would not have even thought about it if I saw it last night.

Of course, IMO, funny is funny, regardless of who it offends.

Fox or Fox News? Fox - no.

Fox News? My initial would reaction would be different.

Why?
Why?

I will let Clyde answer for himself, but I agree with Clyde that I would have a different response if it were Fox News. In my case, that is because I see Fox News as having a very clear agenda they are promoting in all they do. That is from an impartial observer. I also would say MSNBC has a clear agenda.

If I had to guess, NBC (and other studios) have the schedule of when commercials will be shown at what time before the Olympics even began. That knew at that time frame Costas would be commenting on the Olympics and probably highlighting an Athlete who had been performing well during the Olympics but obviously had no idea who the athlete would be when they set up the schedule for commercials during the Olympics.

Which is true. Just bad timing.

I don't think it was intentionally done with malice. Funny as hell though.

I'd have laughed at the irony of it last night had I seen it then.

I enjoyed it even more seeing it this morning in the way it is presented.

Nope. We sure won't.
