This one line has been taken out of context and ran with all weekend. There's a lot more that followed this one sentence. When trying to figure out what Obama is implying take into account what he has said over the years in many speeches and his books. Obama hates businesses in general and big businesses in particular Some where I read about someone asking what would a big businessman do for roads, build his own? Yes, he would have. Where did early roads come from? People simply went out and took the path of least resistance, or like Daniel Boone hacked his way through the wilderness or some took it a step further and built roads and charged a toll. Later government did get involved, but private contractors built the roads and these big businesses became rich off these government contracts. Yes there is a relationship between government and business, but a it is not a relationship of government dominating its people. People who take risks and work hard create success with or without government help. One last note. The internet was created by the military to help defend our nation, not created to help business succeed.

I just think it is hard to have a conversation about this issue that has a favorable compromise at the end because people from opposing sides have different perspectives on his entire statement. I definitely understand why business owners and other Obama opponents take offense with his statement. I just see and hear something completely different when I take the whole statement in.

TA, I find it interesting that you are quick to accuse Romney yet you paint Obama as righteous and politically pure. The president is a slick politician, he learned Chicago style. That line, IMO, is exactly what I and many believe it to be and I clearly stated what that message was. See, that's the problem with the president, sometimes when he goes of the written speech and ad libs, the truth comes out. I distorted nothing, I just hear what he's saying.

To be a little clearer as to his message, let's look at another line in the very same speech that came a little earlier than the line that's gotten all the attention. This is the other line: "We created a lot of millionaires". Who's we? Well...the comment came right after he spoke of the government again. In my view, it drives home the point I made all the more.

You need help and that help should come from the government, so you should pay higher taxes and if you did really well pay even more to the government so 'spread the wealth' as he directly told Joe the Plumber. The vast majority of successful people are good, honest, GENEROUS, hard working people. Most of them are successful in spite of the government, certainly not because of it.
July 20, 201214 yr A teacher or government can only teach so much. At some point it is on the individual to assume the risk. Often that individual fails but when he doesn't fail he should wreap the reward. Are we not taught risk vs reward?

I have never denied that he can play hardball politics. I also believe that he has done a very good job as President and strongly deserves another term. Gov. Romney isn't very specific about his plans, but he has endorsed the Ryan budget and he has pledged to repeal the afordable Care Act.. That means the end of Medicare in its current form. It means drastic cuts in aid to college students. It means drastic cuts in Federal R&D. It is exactly the wrong prescription for what the country needs. The two great paths to the middle class in this country after WWII were education and union jobs. The union jobs are mostly gone. Now they want to make education so expensive that only those with the means will find it affordable. I don't believe that is heir intent, but it wiould be the result of their policies.

Per the thread at hand, I think it's clear that Obama believes big government is why we are successful. I think he's clueless on the subject.
