July 16, 201214 yr Author Why? I have done all of the above and believe me, I know it wasn't all due to me. There were teachers that inspired, roads built by public collective effort. I paid for my own education, but wait, no I didn't. The schools I attended were partially funded by endowments, contributions and taxpayers. If I had been forced to pay the real cost of my education it just wouldn't have happened. We are all in this together, just as the President said.There may be some that were inspired by teachers or someone they knew, there are many that weren't. It's a stretch at best to make the claim he makes. We're all in this together, huh? Tell that to the guy/gal that worked their tail off, risked everything for a business that failed. What did the rest of them lose?

I'd imagine every business owner , unless he/she has no employees, readily admit that they didn't get there on their own. Why is that even a debate? Sure about that? [video=youtube_share;6j8XhQfvpW8]
July 16, 201214 yr It's that one sentence that shows how he knows nothing about running a business and how out of touch he is. Having employees work for you and making payroll every week is a big responsibility. One he knows nothing about. Small business owners, for instance, work long hours, often 7 days a week, often working years without vacations. They are risk takers, they build their business based on imagination, hard work and initiative. Something he's never done. As a private citizen, our president has never forecasted, used or tracked a budget, made a payroll, recruited, trained or hired employees. Never ordered or inventoried stock or wrote purchase orders. "So, If you’ve got a business you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen." I only posted that one sentence because that one sentence really speaks as to how out of touch he is. As to the rest of it, some of it sounds ok, a lot of it wreaks of "you got there because of government, because of people like me". I contend most of them got there in spite of that. I've done all of those over the years. As an employee of a, as we liked to call it, a "semi-private, quasi-public" organization (Community Mental Health Center). Sure doesn't qualify me to be President.

July 16, 201214 yr Sounds like the "it takes a village" philosophy. Some folks subscribe to that, some don't. I do, but I realize that there a lot in the other camp.

However, I think if you look at what he was saying: If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet. The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together. There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don’t do on our own. I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service. That would be a hard way to organize fighting fires. ..... then you see he wasn't saying anything negative towards business owners or saying that the business owner owes all of his/her success to govt. That's what your initial post seemed to imply.

I can see how it can be taken that way in saying 'thank the government.' I just think a lot of people saw that one sentence and ran with it saying things like 'he never ran a business, how would he know." when his entire statement had nothing to do with businesses. Just those few sentences of a huge statement.

Just those few sentences of a huge statement.My view is that politicians rarely say things like that without reason. They're calculated messages designed to drive home a specific point of view. I think that is exactly what he did, I think the crowd picked up on it.

You the business owner put a lot into it and we count on you but you don't do it without help from the govt or teachers or...... You can't be completely free from govt involvement. Any business today selling online owes PART of their success to the thinking of the govt a long time ago. They put their capital up, they took the risk, they worked 8 days per week 25 hours per day but they USED technology developed and paid for by the govt. Reading anything else into his total message is unwise and will lead one astray.
