When discussing this latest statement by our President Barack Obama will you please show the entire statement and not just this one line of the entire statement?

This one line has been taken out of context and ran with all weekend. There's a lot more that followed this one sentence.

Here is the entire statement.

Now discuss.......

THE PRESIDENT:* Well, first of all, like I said, the only way you can pay for that -- if you’re actually saying you’re bringing down the deficit -- is to cut transportation, cut education, cut basic research, voucherize Medicare, and you’re still going to end up having to raise taxes on middle-class families to pay for this $5 trillion tax cut.* That’s not a deficit reduction plan.* That’s a deficit expansion plan.*

**** I’ve got a different idea.* I do believe we can cut -- we’ve already made a trillion dollars’ worth of cuts.* We can make some more cuts in programs that don’t work, and make government work more efficiently.* (Applause.)* Not every government program works the way it’s supposed to.* And frankly, government can’t solve every problem.* If somebody doesn’t want to be helped, government can’t always help them.* Parents -- we can put more money into schools, but if your kids don’t want to learn it’s hard to teach them.* (Applause.)

**** But you know what, I’m not going to see us gut the investments that grow our economy to give tax breaks to me or Mr. Romney or folks who don’t need them.* So I’m going to reduce the deficit in a balanced way.* We’ve already made a trillion dollars’ worth of cuts.* We can make another trillion or trillion-two, and what we then do is ask for the wealthy to pay a little bit more.* (Applause.)* And, by the way, we’ve tried that before -- a guy named Bill Clinton did it.* We created 23 million new jobs, turned a deficit into a surplus, and rich people did just fine.* We created a lot of millionaires.

**** There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me -- because they want to give something back.* They know they didn’t -- look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own.* You didn’t get there on your own.* I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart.* There are a lot of smart people out there.* It must be because I worked harder than everybody else.* Let me tell you something -- there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there.* (Applause.)

**** If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help.* There was a great teacher somewhere in your life.* Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive.* Somebody invested in roads and bridges.* If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that.* Somebody else made that happen.* The Internet didn’t get invented on its own.* Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

**** The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together.* There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don’t do on our own.* I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service.* That would be a hard way to organize fighting fires.*

So we say to ourselves, ever since the founding of this country, you know what, there are some things we do better together.* That’s how we funded the GI Bill.* That’s how we created the middle class.* That’s how we built the Golden Gate Bridge or the Hoover Dam.* That’s how we invented the Internet.* That’s how we sent a man to the moon.* We rise or fall together as one nation and as one people, and that’s the reason I’m running for President -- because I still believe in that idea.* You’re not on your own, we’re in this together.* (Applause.)

So all these issues go back to that first campaign that I talked about, because everything has to do with how do we help middle-class families, working people, strivers, doers -- how do we help them succeed?* How do we make sure that their hard work pays off?* That’s what I've been thinking about the entire time I've been President.

Now, over the next four months, the other side is going to spend more money than we've even seen in history.* And they don’t really have a good argument for how they would do better, but they're thinking they can win the election if they just remind people that a lot of people are still out of work, and the economy is not growing as fast as it needs to, and it's all Obama's fault.* That’s basically their pitch.*

That one bolded sentence has been taken and ran with out of that entire statement he made. I think that is unfair and irresponsible if sensible debate about this statement is to occur.

I would like to know where the folks in this statement live. Or for that matter who they are.

There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me -- because they want to give something back

Here is the entire statement.

I like it. He's completely right. We don't make ourselves from scratch. The ingredients of who we are come from the people and experiences we've had. If I didn't believe that, I would never have gone into the teaching profession.

Wouldn't Warren Buffet be one?

The entire statement sounds as if it's coming from a man who has never started a business, never ran a business or never worked for a business. Maybe it's because he never has, so how would he know ?

I thought it read like he was using analogies to say that it is going to take all of us making a sacrifice at some point to reduce the deficit. We got in this mess together and we'll get out of it together. That was my understanding.

I could be wrong though.

Wouldn't Warren Buffet be one?

If he is so dead set on raising tax on the rich, why hasn't Warren writen a personal check to pay his "fair share" to the IRS yet????

It's real easy to say you'll pay more when you have more money than you could ever spend in 1000 lifetimes.

I want to know when all the folks who have been collecting checks and services that all of us who work pay for, are going to pay there fair share, instead of expecting you and I to provide it for them.

I'll give you three guesses and the first two don't count.

I am going to say the resident at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Probably referring to large, long term, publicly held companies.

I'd like to know also.

His entire statement is in post 3.

This one line has been taken out of context and ran with all weekend. There's a lot more that followed this one sentence.

It's that one sentence that shows how he knows nothing about running a business and how out of touch he is. Having employees work for you and making payroll every week is a big responsibility. One he knows nothing about. Small business owners, for instance, work long hours, often 7 days a week, often working years without vacations. They are risk takers, they build their business based on imagination, hard work and initiative. Something he's never done. As a private citizen, our president has never forecasted, used or tracked a budget, made a payroll, recruited, trained or hired employees. Never ordered or inventoried stock or wrote purchase orders.

"So, If you’ve got a business you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen." I only posted that one sentence because that one sentence really speaks as to how out of touch he is. As to the rest of it, some of it sounds ok, a lot of it wreaks of "you got there because of government, because of people like me". I contend most of them got there in spite of that.

The entire statement sounds as if it's coming from a man who has never started a business, never ran a business or never worked for a business. Maybe it's because he never has, so how would he know ?

Why? I have done all of the above and believe me, I know it wasn't all due to me. There were teachers that inspired, roads built by public collective effort. I paid for my own education, but wait, no I didn't. The schools I attended were partially funded by endowments, contributions and taxpayers. If I had been forced to pay the real cost of my education it just wouldn't have happened. We are all in this together, just as the President said.

RTS, you said his quote was that "somebody ELSE made that happen." His actual quote was "you didn't get there on your own."

That's two different statements. I'd imagine every business owner , unless he/she has no employees, readily admit that they didn't get there on their own.

Why is that even a debate?
