If you’ve got a business...

Examples would be most of your pro Obama posts. I can't think of anyone on here that's a more staunch supporter of Obama than you. I didn't intend that to sound like an insult, so I hope you don't take it that way.

Everything else in you post would be great for another thread. If you wish to start one about it, I'm sure myself and many others will tell you why we feel differently.

Per the thread at hand, I think it's clear that Obama believes big government is why we are successful. I think he's clueless on the subject.

Thank you. I am honored.

I knew you would be.
Ok, that's funny but to be fair I believe Mr. Obama indicated as much when he was named.

It is noble to say that type of thing about your own successes. To degrade the success of others by requiring them to do the same is arrogant.

Thank you for being so specific. Remember, your charge was that I painted President Obama as "righteous and politically pure". I'm still looking for where I did that. Agreeing with a policy position is not "painting" anything.

To me it's the defend him at all cost. Your "explanation" of his comments here has me dizzy from all the spin.

"If you hvae a business, you didn't build that"

Sorry but there is nothing you can say to put that in a favorable light.

Except that it is partly true, in the fact that neither people nor businesses are islands. I think that the better statement would have been "If you have a business, you didn't build that on your own."

I still don't see his point. If you start a business and you build the business then who helped you? Yes, your employees obviously did a job they were paid to do but in the end it was your business plan and work that started and built the company.

The headwinds of starting and running a business are enormous. Small business usually get no help from the government. If you are starting a business you are taking on the financial risk, you are taking on lots of up front cost usually with the HOPE of a payback in the future. Nothing is guaranteed. You have sell your idea, your commitment, your value and your product every day. These have to be sold to customers, potential employees and financial backers - be it in terms of loans from a bank or venture capital from a VC group like the Angels program. Without that one single 'believer' nothing happens.

The context of the comment was one to either: a) generate rational for higher taxes for business owners since they are 'successful' or b) generate a feeling 'needing' the government to succeed.

You have to love the government logic on capital gains and capital losses that reflects 'the help' from government. Capital gains are unlimited. You pay taxes on all of it. But if you have a capital loss - and many start-ups or business failures have those - your losses are limited and capped. Thanks government! You take all the upside but you limit the downside. That is NOT being a partner to the start-up business owner.

As Jon Lovitz pointed out in his tirade - he pays everyone else before he sees a nickle in 'profits'. The last one paid in a business is....the business owner.

If the business owner received a public education, the government via fellow taxpayers helped, not to mention the teachers who chose the profession, regardless of being a public or private institution.

Does the business owner have any post-secondary schooling? If so, did he/she receive grants or financial assistance?

Does the business utilize transportation via roadways, airways or waterways? If so, aren't many of those things funded by taxes?

I do understand that a business owner takes an enormous risk in establishing their own business. I don't dimish that a bit. But to say that anyone builds something entirely on their own is a bit inaccurate.

Sorry but education is only what you make of it. A teacher can put the information out there but it's up to the student to learn it and make the most of it.

Roadways - yes they are tax payer funded. If I pay taxes then my money helped pay for the roads. Besides this isn't something that is directly helping me build my business. I still have to have the idea, the capital, sell the idea, and implement the idea. Because I may have shipped a product using a government road doesn't mean the government helped me build my business. The government did their job. Keep in mind people built the government first.

Airways- Government didn't build the airways so not sure how this applies.

Waterways - Goverment didn't build the oceans so again not seeing the connections.
