Have you read Days of Darkness: The Feuds of Eastern Kentucky? Someone told me it was a well written book that hits on the facts and dispels the the romanticism of the Eastern Kentucky feuds. I saw that it's available for Kindle on Amazon for $9.99.

 

I read that from the Pike Co. Public Library. I knew I had read a couple books on that, but couldn't recall the name of any of them until it was actually mentioned.

It's just crazy to think about this all only happening a few generations ago. Makes you realize why some peoples grandparents could be as tough or hard nosed as they were, well this type of stuff and the carrying their siblings barefoot in the snow two miles to and from school every day....

I saw on the movie data base site where this movie was filmed in Romania. Seems like they would have been more authenic and filmed it in Pike and Mingo Counties.

I think Romania has been used for Appalachia several times before.

I guess I'll be the guy. I give it about a C+. Above average but only slightly so. About halfway through I found the portrayal to be tedious and I was ready for them to get done with it. Well shot and it did leave me wanting to know more about the "true" story but overall not something I'd really recommend.

 

A few other quick points.

- they could have done a better job with the accents.

- I found Paxton's performance to be awful, overacted, often unintentionally humorous and frequently a hillbilly version of his character in Big Love.

- judging by the region, material and the occasional use of modern music I was ready (dying) for a Gillian Welch song.

- I would have liked a lot more bad arse Western and a lot less cheap, Lifetime-like, Romeo & Juliet knockoff.

- Some more perspective and reflection would have been nice. We know "what" happened but how about some more "why" and what the characters "felt"?

I've read it a couple of times. It's a very good account of the many feuds of Eastern Kentucky. From what I gathered in John Ed Pearce's book is that the fueds in Breathitt County were the most violent. It is estimated that around 45 people died in the Breathitt feuds, which were actually several different feuds but had some of the same characters. Those feuds didn't end until 1912, and they had begun not long after the Civil War ended. The county's nickname is "Bloody Breathitt".

He does a good job telling the happenings in the Clay County and Rowan County feuds, too. The Baker-White Feud in Clay County was over timber and land rights, and the Martin-Tolliver Feud in Rowan County was political, involving Democrats on one side and Republicans on the other. It actually was a small war more than a feud, and toward the end involved a 2 hour shootout in the streets of Morehead.

Very much agree. I'd give it a B- rating, which isn't much different. Costner was tolerable & dare I say pretty good in his portrayal of Devil. Not a huge Costner fan, but I thought he was one of the highlights of this project.

 

Couldn't agree more on Bill Paxton. I've never really been impressed by anything he's done. Give me Billy Bob Thornton for that role.

Costner was by far the best part of the mini series(as well as Berenger), he is so good in Westerns and sports movies and this type of movie/mini-series, wish HBO,FX,etc. would specifically write a series for him where he would play a character similiar to Devil in some ways. Paxton and Winningham were simply awful as well as all of the actors in the 'Romeo-Juliet' parts of the series. If they were done right they could have upstaged everything else and made the entire series better

Wow. Billy Bob would have been amazing in that role. I give Costner a high grade.

 

Also, I'm pretty sure Walton Goggins and Timonthy Olyphant could have been worked in there.
