Pres. Obama using killing of OBL as politcal gain.

Featured Replies

Sorry, but too many people act as if Obama himself was a member of the Seal Team and pulled the trigger himself. I know you don't think that way, but many give way too much credit and I find that offensive to our military. Spiking the football (especially for political gain), as it was put, cheapens a great accomplishment of our fine military personnel IMO.

I understand who all was involved in finding and killing UbL. Obama has always acknowledged the military's role and he is the Commander-in-Chief. Whether he was in the compound that night or not he deserves to spike the ball. Had he not found and killed UbL Romney would be pointing that out in his ads and Obama would be skewered for not having found him not the military. Had something worse happen like we attack the compound, lose military lives in the process and UbL is still alive the Obama wouldn't have a chance for re-election and he'd literally be the most hated man in America. He made a tremendously risky call and it worked. Spike the ball, Obama. Spike it. He has always acknowledged the military and their sacrifice and their role in preserving our freedom. I think too much is made of his rhetoric surrounding the capture and killing of UbL and that people want to have a reason to criticize him for every move he makes regardless of his intentions. Why wouldn't any POTUS be proud of the accomplishment of killing UbL during their term?

PP92...It was Obama who said it was no reason to spike the football.

Hey if I was POTUS, and the Seals did what they did, doggone right there would have been some high fiving in the room that night....

Again, I said he deserves credit. But have you forgotten that Obama himself said we shouldn't spike the ball? Now he is.

I don't have the article, but I thought I heard yesterday that some SEAL team members, both serving and former, accused Obama of using Special Forces operators as ammunition for his re-election campaign. If true, sounds like they're not happy about it.

Bush has been mentioned in this thread for doing the same thing, Bush was critcized by the main stream media and by many on here for doing so. Funny how things change.

Huge difference between OBL and Hussein. We declared war against Iraq before we invaded Iraq to get Hussein. We did not declare war against Pakinstan before we violated their sovereign rights to get OBL.

How would you feel is China, Russia, Britian, etc. sent a military squad on to continental US soil to capture/kill an enemy of their's? My guess is the whole country would be up in arms (and would have been justified in doing so). I'm amazed more people don't look at the violation of Pakistan's sovereignity as critically or seriously as I do.

It would seem to be a massive State Department failure that this was a unilateral 'black op' and that it was done without Pakistan knowledge. But since Pakistan was hosting OBL, clearly with their knowledge, it probably made Ms. Clinton's job as SoS 'difficult'. If we were not going visibly punish Pakistan for their actions then a course of action may have been to keep the operation secret for a few days and work out a 'cover story' with Pakistan so that they could have some public cover. But due to the speed of the announcement of the mission that was not done. Everyone knows we 'invaded' and that Pakistan was kept in the dark. It seems like an international disaster strategically.

Pakistan is now in the gray area of international diplomacy. Lack of clarity is a major no-no in international relations strategically. This whole situation lacks strategic clarity.

Bush was mentioned in this thread for saying Mission Accomplished when the mission wasn't accomplished is what I thought. I may have misunderstood how it was said.

I thought in a prior post a while back you were against the "he did it too defense"? Is it ok now?

Yep - just call me "Etch-a-Sketch Boy".biggrin.gif

I was under the impression that we didn't formally declare war on Iraq.

In all seriousness, your original post tickled my funny bone. Something along the lines of "we've gone from he did it too to what would he have done". I just thought it was amusing that, in fact, we have already gone from he did it too to what would he have done.

The irony was delicious.

I was under the impression that we didn't formally declare war on Iraq.

Formal Declaration of War-no; however, Bush was authorized by Congress to invade Iraq. It wasn't a secret that we would be crossing Iraq's border to engage in combat operations. For purposes of this discussion, the nuances between a formal Declaration of War and Congress authorizing the use of military forces against Iraq are irrelevant.

Would you care to answer my question as to how you would feel if a country sent their military forces into the US (without our permission) to kill an enemy? No one has accepted that challenge yet.

Spoken from the party who had 8 years to kill him!

Just clarifying ... thanks.

Or, more accurately, spoken from the party that established the on ground and in air intel gathering capabilities that enabled President Obama to be in the position to make the decision.

^This, seriously? If Bush would have done the same thing you would have not had a problem with it! I wonder if permission was giving from air space to fly into the twin towers? That's why OBL hid in Pakistan, because he didn't think the US had enough balls to come and get him.

You're certaintly entitled to think you know how I would have felt if Bush had done the same thing, but you are wrong in your thinking.

And seriously: how would you have felt if the bolded scenario had unfolded? Did we do anything different by sending a military team into Pakistan?
