That is what I would say....especiallly now that there are six crowns when before there were 4. Don't get defensive, Beechwood is still a power, but they ain't bringin' back the crowns like they used to. That is a simple fact. They have dropped a bit, that's all. It happens.

Yes, getting back to BW. I have dates for BW playing SK again in the Skyline Showdown and games against Bellevue and Ludlow. Does anyone know the rest of the BW schedule? Ok, Pick and Snot. Let's pencil in BW and Mayfield on each others schedule as well for now so we have something to talk about for the summer.

IMO, not much to learn. Hazard won that game because Jackson was hurt. He wasn't even close to the player in that game that I have seen the last couple of years.

 

I do see irony in that because personally I feel Beechwood lost the Mayfield game because Davis was hurt, although that is not nearly as clear cut as the Mayfield / Hazard game.

 

I personally am not a fan of diminishing a team's win because the other team had an injured player that may have or may not have changed the outcome of the game. I bet every team that played in the State Championship game had injuries. Hazard has the trophy, that's all that matters.

 

My intent wasn't to diminish Hazard but to point out that IMO Mayfield doesn't have anything they need to learn from that loss. They were just fine in what they did if Jackson were healthy.

It is now a source of motivation for this year. Just as I assume it was for Hazard last and I imagine the several years in a row of getting beat by Mayfield is motivation for Bw.

 

I wonder if the Tigers will make a effort to move their offense to a more balanced attack. I still expect them to be run first just as we are but I think they would benefit by developing a better pass attack for those nights where the run is stuffed. Two years ago at Bw the game vs Mayfield would have been alot worse had Bw not passed for a couple of scores and last year is tuff to say giventhe qb issues. 3 years ago Bw had no pass and it resulted in a blowout. I think it will again be hard for Bw to advance past the Frankfort or the Cards without a much improved passing game. I think Louisville Holy Cross also found the same to be true the last 2 years. Just a opinion but it will be interesting to see if Bw tries to adapt to a more balanced attack with the youngsters

I agree TP. The passing attack is critical for both teams. Both teams are good at running the ball. Mayfield has beaten Beechwood the last few years in big part because they had the better passing attack. Two years ago at Beechwood the Mayfield passing attack is why they won that game. Last year, neither team did much throwing the ball but Beechwood's biggest play was via the pass. If either team had been able to pass the ball better, that team would have taken control of the game. Beechwood needs a better passing offense.

Disagree wholeheartedly....Hazard dominated that game from start to finish. Mayfield was never in it. I doubt one player would have made that big of a difference. Mayfield had the trophy in thier hands before they ever walked onto the field and just weren't ready to play. Hazard took them behind the woodshed as a result and I saw a very good Mayfield team just lie down early in the fourth quarter. Outplayed and outcoached. Plain and simple. Hazard deserved the trophy.

I agree , Mayfield was beaten solidly. Mayfield was a beat up team going into the Hazard game, 2 or 3 linemen out plus Jackson hurt along with Scott. Also, Mayfield probably took Hazard for granted somewhat. In the end Hazard was the best team that day and they have the trophy. I am going to say 4 teams have a shot this year going on what little I know and they are Mayfield-Hazard-Beechwood and Frankfort.

I agree with you that Hazard controlled the game from start to finish and deserved the trophy. I also say Hazard is consistently underrated on this website and around the state. Hazard is a very good program and they always have star athletes which they do a very good job building a team around. Don't sell your Hazard team short by saying Mayfield didn't show up. They did show up. I overstated it by saying Hazard won that game because Jackson was hurt. Hazard had an excellent team. But the facts are the facts. As TP said above, Mayfield was beat up going into that game (more than just Jackson) and a healthy Jonathon Jackson would have made a significant impact. Believe me, the Jonathon Jackson you saw wasn't 50% of what he usually is on the field. But you play with what you have and Hazard clearly put the best team on the field in last year's title game. If Mayfield showed up without the energy you expected, my guess it was more about the injured players and knowing Jackson was at 50% than it was overconfidence. Jackson is a great player who makes a big difference in any game on both sides of the ball. And I find it hard to say that one man can win a football game, but IMO and the opinion of others who watched the Beechwood / Mayfield game, as much as it is possible to do in football, Jonathon Jackson single handedly won that game for Mayfield.

That sounds about right - around 20 seniors last year and nearly all of them started or played significant minutes. Beechwood usually gradutes around 80 Students (boys and girls) each year. Add in the fact that next year's senior class is smaller than usual - only about 10 or so football players. The good news is all those incoming seniors have lettered, went undefeated as a JV unit and include some stud players.

I would not go as far as saying that Mayfield was NEVER in the game, If I remember correctly they were only down 6 at half, maybe it was 9, but either way they were still in the game.

That is a matter of opinion.

We know pretty much what we will get with Nussbaum. What I am anxious to see is how effectively a healthy Gage Erdman and Junior to be Mitch Thomas will be used. Those three in the same backfield offer a triple threat of hitting a home run at any time. If the line can hold a block long enough then these three will be able to run........and I repeat, if the line can hold a block. Yes, it would be nice to have a passing game mixed in. Time will tell. The leg of Joey Nussbaum will also be missed. It's nice to know that you will almost always srart on defense at the opponent's 20 after a kickoff. That is a rarity in HS football.

Great point, having your opponenet start at their 20 on 95% of the kickoffs is huge, not sure anyone can fill the void left by Joey. A healthy Gage Erdman takes the heat off Nussbaum, and Mitch Thomas gives them another burner in the backfield, what remains to be seen is what is going to happen with the QB, not sure anyone has emerged as a clear cut favorite to lead the Tigers.
