Featured Replies

Is it possible Jesus is black or is he white? Or Hispanic? Or Middle Eastern? Or Asian?

I would assume he was Middle Eastern/Mediterranean in appearance. Shorter, thick and somewhat bristly hair and beard, darker skin tone. Something like this:

God said he made man in his image, I know he got it right with me because I look great so I've just always assumed Jesus couldn't look too far off...... :idunno:

God is neither black or white. He is neither Hispanic, Asian or Middle Eastern. God is a spirit. A spirit that took on the form of a man to come down to this earth to save man from sin. He took that form so he could interact with us. We can not look onto God because if we did we would surely die.

20 And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.

21 And the Lord said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock:

22 And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:

23 And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen. Ex 33:20-23 (KJV)

We try to conform God to what we think he should look like or how we think he should act.

8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.

9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:8-9 (KJV)

The body that Jesus had when he walked the Earth I would venture to guess was not fair skinned, blonde haired and blue eyed like a lot of the artists renderings. I agree with CWB that his appearance was almost assuredly middle eastern, like everyone else in that part of the world.

Agree

If that is the case he needs to work on that lettuce up top.

So if Jesus is walking amongst us today he's definitely getting stopped by TSA.

Jesus is whatever you imagine him to be. That picture is definitely not how I see him; besides, I'm partial to blue eyes.

I am asking about Jesus though.

I've never given it deep thought before. I know I don't think most of the images of Jesus I have seen since I was a kid are accurate but I always wondered what other people believe. If you go into some black homes or churches they have images of a black Jesus and in white homes or churches it is of a white Jesus. I've always wondered what racist people(black and white) will feel when they ultimately find out and are surprised by the answer.

Earl Monroe?

My thought as a child who grew up in white suburban America was certainly that Jesus had the white-Anglo appearance that you find as the result of most of western Europe's historical religious culture. As I grew older and became aware of the general inaccuracy of that, I was introduced to the historic culture of Jesus and Jesus' ethnic heritage. Jesus was a Galilean by birth, and was born of Judean parents (we learn in the Bible that Mary was in the Tribe of Judah and the lineage of David, and we know Joseph's family was from the Judean city of Bethlehem, where he had to return for the Census).

Still, going further back, we know that the Hebrews that came to inhabit Israel, the promised land, are traditionally believed to be descendants of Abraham. There is no real historical reference to know where Abraham was born, but we know that he spent most of his life, and he died in the land of Canaan. Assuming he was originally from somewhere around there, this would imply that Abraham too was from somewhere around the area of modern day Israel & Palestine.

If you take a look at the people whose ethnic heritage is from the Israel/Palestine area, you'll find that, pretty clearly, the photo I posted above is fairly accurate as an example of their appearance is, and is in all likelihood a good picture of what Jesus may well have appeared as while on earth.

I always took the black/white/middle eastern Jesus look within a church metaphorically in that we were all created in his image. Getting down to the nuts and bolts of it, he would have to be Middle Eastern looking because, well, that is where is was from. If Dublin, Ireland was the epicenter then a red haired freckled guy would be more likely :D
