April 8, 201214 yr Wouldn't expect anything else from you. Well really? What are we supposed to believe -- that Jesus was the only white man with blond hair and blue eyes in Palestine at the time? C'mon.
April 8, 201214 yr ^ your reading way too much into my post. I just meant that you are by your own admission a skeptic due to your profession. I have no idea what Jesus really looked like nor does anyone else. I would assume he would look like a Jewish man indigenous to that area from around 2000 years ago. It does not matter to me however, Jesus is my Lord and Savior. I don't worry about what he looks like.
April 9, 201214 yr Not a relevant question for Jesus as Lord and Savior ^ your reading way too much into my post. I just meant that you are by your own admission a skeptic due to your profession. While I agree that it doesn't necessarily matter from the spiritual standpoint, the problem is that far too many people over the years have advanced the blond-haired, blue-eyed Jesus as an inarguable fact, to the point they used it to justify racism. That's my beef with the white Jesus crowd. Frankly, there was only one white Jesus, and that's the white basketball Jesus, otherwise known as the "Hick from French Lick."

Racists are idiots who grasp on anything that they can twist to suport their idiocy. We need to encourage them to ride bikes without helmets, run with scissors and cross streets without looking.
April 9, 201214 yr This a painting that a little girl painted from dreams she had of meeting Jesus. This is the only picture that Colton Burpo "Heaven is for real", said looked like Jesus. He had been shown numerous pictures and paintings of Jesus but said that all of them were off somehow. When Colton saw this painting he stopped and said that it was right. I write the songs that make the whole world sing.
April 9, 201214 yr I think you just described this guy... . I can buy that Jesus looked like Tony Shaloub.
April 9, 201214 yr I write the songs that make the whole world sing.I was thinking more along the lines of "House on Pooh Corner."

April 11, 201214 yr It's a really funny question, atleast for me. I know that Jesus probably wasn't a white guy and it's more than likely that he looked Middle Eastern-ish. In my head I still see him as a white guy when I think about him though.
April 11, 201214 yr My thought as a child who grew up in white suburban America was certainly that Jesus had the white-Anglo appearance that you find as the result of most of western Europe's historical religious culture. As I grew older and became aware of the general inaccuracy of that, I was introduced to the historic culture of Jesus and Jesus' ethnic heritage. Jesus was a Galilean by birth, and was born of Judean parents (we learn in the Bible that Mary was in the Tribe of Judah and the lineage of David, and we know Joseph's family was from the Judean city of Bethlehem, where he had to return for the Census). Still, going further back, we know that the Hebrews that came to inhabit Israel, the promised land, are traditionally believed to be descendants of Abraham. There is no real historical reference to know where Abraham was born, but we know that he spent most of his life, and he died in the land of Canaan. Assuming he was originally from somewhere around there, this would imply that Abraham too was from somewhere around the area of modern day Israel & Palestine. If you take a look at the people whose ethnic heritage is from the Israel/Palestine area, you'll find that, pretty clearly, the photo I posted above is fairly accurate as an example of their appearance is, and is in all likelihood a good picture of what Jesus may well have appeared as while on earth. Dead serious question here. Who cares about family backgrounds and where they were from? He was conceived immaculately. Couldn't God have made him appear any color he wanted? If he was conceived traditionally through intercourse all of your points would make sense. He wasn't though so where does Joseph's family background fit in for a description?

You're question certainly makes sense. Frankly, I think your point about Joseph's heritage is very valid. I guess my response would be to say that if Jesus' appearance was something unusual or extraordinary, it would have likely been noted somewhere as a "miraculous" detail about him. The fact that we hear specifics in the Bible such as the fact that Jesus' robe was without any seams and woven from a single strand would suggest that the writers of the Gospels were detail oriented. That being said, I would have to assume that the physical appearance of Jesus "fit in" and was appropriately similar to that of his family members - Mary and Joseph. Does that mean that God couldn't have made Jesus look like someone or something else? Of course not. In the end, does Jesus' appearance really matter to me or have any bearings on my faith in God and religion? Not at all. They're irrelevant details, but they're details all the same.
April 11, 201214 yr Author It's a really funny question, atleast for me. I know that Jesus probably wasn't a white guy and it's more than likely that he looked Middle Eastern-ish. In my head I still see him as a white guy when I think about him though. I have also. As a child my image of Jesus was that he was a white man. It wasn't until I was older and visited different churches that I saw a black Jesus on the cross. As I met more people and went into different homes I began to see pictures of a black Jesus. I've always thought it was pretty cool to see an image of black Jesus. Especially when the general perception is that he was a white man. I've always wondered what that masses think and I had never seen that question posed on here so I figured that I would ask. I have enjoyed the different answers and perspectives.

I agree with everything you're saying. Point being generally like you said is who cares? The people that say he looked like this or that though are making educated guesses. He very well could have had blue eyes and light skin (I agree that we would have probably have read that though).
