April 3, 201214 yr I thought we came to the consensus that everyone profiles but the difference between is and Zimmerman is that he 1.) allegedly acted on his profiling and 2.) killed someone in that action. That's a lot different than crossing the street. I dont disagree with you but do we really know that Zimmerman killed him because he was black or because things just got out of control. It seems now the video does show an injury and the news media is cutting up 911 calls and playing it as a racial thing. I'm not defending his actions but I wasnt there and dont know what exactly happened either.
April 3, 201214 yr Regardless of the skin color, clothes, age, you have to trust your instincts. If that inner voice is telling you to put some distance between yourself and the group that you need to pass by, then you find a way to discreetly do it. It's part of that "stranger danger" thing I teach my kids.

It's part of that "stranger danger" thing I teach my kids. You can say the same for Zimmerman *he trusted his instincts and inner voice about thinking there was a potential thief, since there had been some in the past. *he saw a stranger at night in the gated community and viewed it as a danger. Stranger Danger.
April 3, 201214 yr I have a friend whose son, along with few other young men, had worked a job at U.S. Bank Arena recently. They were on their way to their cars when a group of young black males dressed in red jumped them and beat them. After it was over, they tried to make it to their cars when a second group of black males jumped them a second time, beating and kicking them as they were down. Thankfully a guy in a car thew his car in reverse squealing tires, which scared them off. Since they couldn't give much better of a description of their assailants, the police couldn't do anything. So, as a result of this and many times I've heard similar stories, yes, I'd cross the street, just as I would if I saw whites as described in this thread coming toward my family and me.

April 3, 201214 yr And to everyone who says they would cross the street, that is racial profiling, something Zimmerman is accused of and we all see how he is being treated on here. I dont disagree with you but do we really know that Zimmerman killed him because he was black or because things just got out of control. Stranger Danger. I don't want to turn this into another Zimmerman thread, but the HUGE difference with Zimmerman is he was told by the police not to do exactly what he did and he went ahead and did it anyway. Everything that happened to Zimmerman was 100% his fault because he pursued Martin.

Even if he did follow Martin that did not give Martin the right to attack Zimmerman.

So if a neighborhood watch guy sees someone strange, they are just supposed to let them go about their business. Whats the sense of having neighborhood watch.
April 3, 201214 yr A dispatcher isnt the police. So if a neighborhood watch guy sees someone strange, they are just supposed to let them go about their business. Whats the sense of having neighborhood watch. I thought he wasn't even a 'licensed' neighborhood watch captain and that he appointed himself.
April 3, 201214 yr It was a dispatcher that told him not the police. Even if he did follow Martin that did not give Martin the right to attack Zimmerman. We still don't know the circumstances to the attack. All we know is that Zimmerman followed Martin when the dispatcher advised him to wait for the police.

Whats the sense of having neighborhood watch. Yes, they are supposed to let them go about their business. A neighborhood watch person's job is to report suspicious activity...period. They are not supposed to carry a weapon or approach anyone, let alone follow and shoot someone. The purpose of a neighborhood watch is to be the eyes and ears of the police since they obviously can't be everywhere at once.
April 3, 201214 yr If this is the only information I would just carry on as normal. If I'm in an unfamiliar, deserted place at 3 a.m. I'm going to be leery of anyone I see. If I'm walking through my neighborhood at a reasonable hour and see some black kids I'm not going to run scared.
