If you are white how would you handle this?

I would not cross the street but I have learned from BGP that I should not comment that anyone is well spoken when I nod hello.
I'd definitely avoid this. :D

I am a big believer in trusting your instincts. I wonder how any people have been robbed or hurt because they didn't want to appear racist, and ignored their instincts?

I work in a very racially integrated environment, in a not so great neighborhood. Sometimes I leave work after dark. Many years ago, I attended an employee safety class (taught by a black officer). He repeatedly stressed the importance of being aware of your surroundings, which is not always easy in this cell phone world. Sometimes I hold my purse a little closer and walk to my car a little quicker, when I see strangers. This is not based on race, but the overall demeanor of those I see.

As far as the Guru's initial question...I think if you dress like a thug, and act like a thug (black or white), you can't blame people for seeing you as a thug. I probably would have crossed the street. I also would have crossed the street if I saw a group of white kids dressed like thugs.

I think "safe" depends on who you ask. I know people who think Germantown is a bad neighborhood but I quite enjoy it. The areas I'm running in I feel safe and I am cautious as I do avoid going down unlit alleys or anything silly like that. I do realize there are areas in town which are undoubtedly not safe but you won't catch me running through those.

You did pique my curiosity. Since we are talking about running would it even be safe to run with a handgun?

You can run with a concealment waist band like the PT-ONE, BUT I'd advise you to practice and develop the skills you would need to draw your weapon and shoot on the run. You would need to become comfortable with quickly pulling the weapon, keeping a good grasp and pointing on target. If there is anywhere you can practice shooting on the run, do so.

Thank you. The girl I know who got severely attacked by a dog definitely would like to carry when she runs. I'll pass this along.

You know anyone who uses one of these?

I side with FKY in this. I am not a person who generally feels unsafe at any time. I honestly can't thik of anywhere I'd go that I'd immediately feel unsafe. This is serious....awareness is the #1 key to personal safety. The second is to know a few things about human behavior. Looking someone square in the face and speaking to them is a very great way to avoid unwanted conflict. Would-be wrong-doers count on people's lack of observance. If you make it clear that you see them, you see them well, and notice them enough to speak to them, it's a great deterrant to crimes that may be a possibility otherwise. A lot of you think I'm a wackadoo, but it's the truth.
I'm sure this often works, however, this didn't work for my sister-in-law. Had it not been for the bus driver coming to her aid, had he been one minute late, she might not be here today.

My friends son was simply working a Christian concert and it wasn't very late at night and in an area I've walked numerous times and felt safe. You just never know.

I think a rep or two that I know uses them, but I don't get to talk to them very often.

Like I said, I avoid places I know are unsafe. :D

Hmm. I wonder how comfortable they are on extended runs.

If I get a chance I'll ask them for you. I'm not a runner, just a walker, so I have no personal experience to pass along.

You don't describe in detail the events of either scenario, so I can't rebutt your opposition to my theory.

HOWEVER, I will tell you that personal defense coaches, acclaimed authors, and several former and current police persons I know agree with me. :p

Cool deal. Thank you.

Do you carry at all times?

Shooting on the run is extremely difficult.

She could be a ninja for all I know, so it might be easy for her.
