March 28, 201214 yr Who on here has ever made that claim? On the contrary, I've seen posts that acknowledge that it will never go away. I've seen it in quite a few threads on here. It is suggested that things are different now and these problems are overblown and used to make money by the likes of Sharpton and Jackson. While those guys are easy targets and in most cases deservedly so there are still major problems with racism in this country. The Rand Paul civil rights act thread comes to mind but I'm not sure if thats where it was or not.
March 28, 201214 yr I can tell you that the so called code has been in exsistence since the end of the civil war. My grandparents told it to my parents and my parents told it to me. I've told it to my kids. I've told my kids, especially my boys, the same thing. You say it is profiling by blacks well it is in response to what has happened to us. I can tell you for a fact that I've heard it all my life because of the way I speak and carry myself that sometimes when people first meet me after talking to me on the phone they are surprised. They don't say anything but it is their reactions to lets me know. To be honest I've had black people treat me the same way. My sons too. I've been in the parking lot of a store minding my own business. Getting out of my car and see a woman walking and switching her purse to the her side opposite of me and clinching it tighter. Why was it because I was six feet tall? I've told my boys the same things about the police. They've had to use the advice also. We tell our boys that because it has happened in the past and still happens to day. If you are black and are going through and affluent neighbor hood you are going to be checked out. You all can say it is racial profiling if you want but I want my boys to be safe and as I mentioned earlier both of them have had things happen to them as I did. Before any of you say it is wrong, tell me this one thing and I'll apologize. I want each one of you to give a guarantee that my sons and grandsons can walk or drive throught the aformentioned neighboorhoods and not be the victim of anything happening to them because they are black. You are not telling your sons anything different from what I tell my daughter. The difference: you talk about being black and watching out for white people; I talk about being a young woman and watching out for boys. I'm sorry that we both have to have these types of talks with our kids about who to watch out for in this world and what to be aware of to stay safe.

March 28, 201214 yr Being half-Hispanic, my father has had similar discussions with me. However, I did have a high school guidance counselor tell me that if I didn't tell anyone otherwise, that I could pass for white. Of course, that would only be until they heard my last name.
March 28, 201214 yr To the yes so what answer. Blacks complain that they are profiled by whites, so isn't that what blacks are doing, profiling white people. You need to distinguish between the natural human nature of profiling and the legal/illegal argument regarding profiling. It's two distinct arguments. Which one are you referring to?
March 28, 201214 yr I hope Alabama Larry prays for both of you guys. Because you both need it badly. Aren't you angry that the Africans sold their sons and daughters to those of European heritage? Can you believe a people would sell human beings to others? That is crazy. Similar thing goes on now in some Asian countries. It is against countires laws, but people do it anyway for the money. Aren't you enraged?

I'm sorry that we both have to have these types of talks with our kids about who to watch out for in this world and what to be aware of to stay safe. As I read through these posts I thought the same about my daughter, and also warnings I gave my sons when they were teenagers about being in the wrong places....nothing good ever happens after midnight. Our brains are wired to rationalize and fill in gaps to allow for quick decisions. The shortcoming is that the gaps can be filled only with past experiences or with knowledge, and often the knowledge is tainted with false impressions or suspicions. We don't HAVE to have prejudice and racism, but it is clearly being passed on from generation to generation. BTW, I will guarantee that nothing bad will happen to any PERSON that walks through my neigborhood during normal walking hours and behaves normally. Someone walking through at odd hours behaving strangely will be looked at with suspicion.

March 28, 201214 yr I have been critical of mountain ref before, but I think he does bring up a unique point. I cannot begin to understand the year's of pain and suffering African Americans went through to capture their "freedom" for which they have today. That should not be forgotten and we, as Americans do a good job of recognizing those moments in our history. From my perspective - and I said this in another thread and not meant as disrespectful - African Americans, and their race means more to them than ALMOST anything else in the world. Obviously you have God, Family, etc. ahead of race, but I think PP92 would tell you it is extremely important and from a young age taught by other African Americans of how important that is. If you are white and take pride in your race, you are considered a racist. For White Americans, race is not as important. Why? Because it never had to be important. Let me rephrase here. It has always been important whether we knew it or not, but for far different reasons than it would be for an African American. We have always been given the benefit of the doubt walking through affluent neighborhoods at night time. Is it racial profiling what the author is saying. You darn right it is. Do not kid yourself otherwise. But is racial profiling sometimes a harsh reality of life? No doubt about it. Here is the problem with your premise, and all of the others on here. Black is not a race and white is not a race. People are taught to be proud of the Irish, Scottish, Italian heritage ALL OF THE TIME, we even have parades celebrating it. Blacks are taught to be proud of their culture, but they aren't taught that in schools because history is written by the white folk and African and Middle Eastern contributions are often shortchanged, even when teaching world history. Race is a man-made distinction. There are no genetics that separate one 'race' from another.

However, I did have a high school guidance counselor tell me that if I didn't tell anyone otherwise, that I could pass for white. Of course, that would only be until they heard my last name. I know exactly what you mean. My sister and I wanted to transfer from Calloway County to Murray High School. The reason I was given was that Calloway only had 10 blacks but my sister could go, and actually did for awhile, because her skin was much lighter than mine.
March 28, 201214 yr Were they sold or kidnapped? Either way...abominable! And what of today...the present...what are we doing to stop a people from selling their sons and daughters outright for sex at a pre-teen age?

What has been said, and is true, is that it is better than in the past, not that it is no longer around.

That guidance counselor sure was in the wrong profession .
March 28, 201214 yr So, the ownership of other humans and the continued subservient treatment of black persons in this country (which is undoubtedly still an issue) is justifiable because "other people did it too?" That's pathetic.
