March 28, 201214 yr I can tell you that the so called code has been in exsistence since the end of the civil war. My grandparents told it to my parents and my parents told it to me. I've told it to my kids. I've told my kids, especially my boys, the same thing. You say it is profiling by blacks well it is in response to what has happened to us. I can tell you for a fact that I've heard it all my life because of the way I speak and carry myself that sometimes when people first meet me after talking to me on the phone they are surprised. They don't say anything but it is their reactions to lets me know. To be honest I've had black people treat me the same way. My sons too. I've been in the parking lot of a store minding my own business. Getting out of my car and see a woman walking and switching her purse to the her side opposite of me and clinching it tighter. Why was it because I was six feet tall? I've told my boys the same things about the police. They've had to use the advice also. We tell our boys that because it has happened in the past and still happens to day. If you are black and are going through and affluent neighbor hood you are going to be checked out. You all can say it is racial profiling if you want but I want my boys to be safe and as I mentioned earlier both of them have had things happen to them as I did. Before any of you say it is wrong, tell me this one thing and I'll apologize. I want each one of you to give a guarantee that my sons and grandsons can walk or drive throught the aformentioned neighboorhoods and not be the victim of anything happening to them because they are black. Actually it's very smart and wise of you to give that advise to your sons just like it is very smart and wise of lawildcat to give similar advise to his daughter. If I walked through your neighborhood dressed as a skin head, do you think you would look at me differently than if I was walking through the neighborhood dressed in a suit? When I'm walking back to my office late at night from a dinner at a restaurant with a client, why am I more "on guard" when I see a bunch of kids (white or black) with baggy pants, hoodies and tats than I am if I see a group of well dressed kids in coats and ties? It's not because of racism. If I was a bigot or racist, I would treat be wary of all black people, which is certainly not the case at all as I have many friends, partners and clients who are black. If you look at me differently in skin head garb than you would in a suit, it's not because you are a racist towards all whites. We act differently when we feel threatened. The fight or flight trait mentioned earlier. I work in downtown Cincinnati. A large percentage of the after work-hours crime downtown is committed by black youth. I'd be stupid and foolish not to look cautiously at a bunch of young black men walking down my side of the street towards me. It's not because I'm a racist. Again, if I was a racist I'd feel threatened by every black, and that's definitely not the case (as my black law partners, clients and friends would surely attest). It's because of my mind processing all the information inputted into it about late night crime in downtown Cincinnati. I have no problem believing that if a large percentage of late night crime was being committed by groups of middle age white men dressed in blue suits, I'd look at a group of middle aged men dressed in blue suits walking towards me late at night just as cautiously. I would. Heck, when I go into a bar, the first thing I do is notice the people in the bar around me. I see who is drunk. I look for rednecks who might be looking for a fight. If I don't feel comfortable, I leave if I can. If I can't leave, I drink very, very little (the best way to get hurt in bar fight is to be drunk). I'm just aware of my surroundings and aware of those things that I think are threatening. Heck, I know plenty of folks that still check out every available exit door when in a crowded restaurant because of what happened at the Beverly Hills Supper Club decades ago. Why? Because they feel that they are in a situation that could be threatening to their lives. You are smart to discuss the "code" with your sons because they may place themselves in a threatening situation. I doubt that you do it because you are a racists towards whites. Lawildcat is smart to discuss things with his daughters because they find themselves in threatening situations. I doubt lawildcat is a sexist who hates all males. We all feel threatened by certain scenarios that I don't think can be simply blamed on actual racism. Situational stereotyping yes, racism no. Our survival instincts cause us to process information and react when we think we are in a threatening situation. Your sons may be the best kids on the face of this earth, but it's an unfortunate reality that a lot of crime is caused by black youth today. It is almost irrational to think that white people living in an affluent neighborhood not used to seeing black youth in it aren't going to "check out" your sons. They feel threatened. Just like black people would feel threatened if they saw someone dressed as skin head in their neighborhood.
March 28, 201214 yr As I read through these posts I thought the same about my daughter, and also warnings I gave my sons when they were teenagers about being in the wrong places....nothing good ever happens after midnight. Our brains are wired to rationalize and fill in gaps to allow for quick decisions. The shortcoming is that the gaps can be filled only with past experiences or with knowledge, and often the knowledge is tainted with false impressions or suspicions. We don't HAVE to have prejudice and racism, but it is clearly being passed on from generation to generation. BTW, I will guarantee that nothing bad will happen to any PERSON that walks through my neigborhood during normal walking hours and behaves normally. Someone walking through at odd hours behaving strangely will be looked at with suspicion. So there is a time frame to your guarante?. Does your neighborhood have the normal walking times and the proper behavior patterns posted so I or anyone else that comes through will know?
March 28, 201214 yr You were trying to argue that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 should be repealed. That it is actually making things worse because we've moved beyond many of the issues. Racism will always exist and it is better at least instituationally. However it is 2012 and we have a young black man that was shot and killed for nothing more than walking through a white neighborhood while the lighter skin man that shot him walks free. Then we have a thread like this suggesting reverse racism. Is it really better? If this was a white kid in a black neighborhood is there any chance his shooter would be free right now? Would a major media outlet suggest the white kid shouldn't have been there and should have dressed less white? I will keep trying though. Wow is my first response. Wow. How does questioning whether the Civil Rights Act should be repealed equate with your assertion that my post stated that racism is no longer present in America? Read it again: I wasn't trying to argue that it should be repealed. I never said it should be repealed (just like I never said there is no racism is present in the US today). I was questioning whether it is still needed and whether the need is so strong as to continue to deprive property owners of property rights. You just keep trying to find a post, particularly a post by me, stating that racism has been totally eliminated in the US.

I'm reading this as a 300 well worded justification as to why it was okay for Zimmermann to "check out" Trayvon Martin. Is that accurate?

I should have picked someone else's because you seem to have a case of rabbit ears when someone doesn't Amen everything in your posts, especially me for whatever reason. You did suggest that the issues of racism were pretty much eliminated although you did qualifiy that statement with the term educated.
March 28, 201214 yr http://bluegrasspreps.com/kentucky-national-politics/gop-led-senate-205113.html#post3825960 Here's one, right in the thread I told you it was in. Great, now show me where it says there is no racism. Which is what you're claiming people have said.

I'm thinking it's more because you called LN (and myself) a liar yesterday and are now trying to put words in his mouth that simply were never posted.

I didn't call anyone a liar I disagree that money given to your spouse (and in effect you) doesn't effect your decision making but that's for another thread.

March 28, 201214 yr I will as soon as you show me where I said that people said there is no racism. Post 10 "Using this thread as evidence.....Is there anyone who still wants to claim that racism in America is a problem of the past?" If people have, as you stated, claimed that racism is a problem of the past, does that not mean there is no racism? All I have ever seen on here is people saying it is less than in the past. Never have I seen anyone post that it is not a problem. I have seen people post that they haven't personally witnessed racism. As hard as that is to believe, it is still not the same as saying that the problem does'nt exist.

I'd agree from a white, suburban middle class male's perspective that it does appear to be getting better but then things like the Martin case happen. It doesn't shine a favorable light on that belief.

You did suggest that the issues of racism were pretty much eliminated although you did qualifiy that statement with the term educated. Wait. Let me get this straight. You, by using a prior post of mine to support your contention, bring me into your discussion yet it is I that have a case of rabbit ears concerning you? I'd offer the suggestion that if you don't like me responding to your posts, you not quote mine.

I'd feel threatened by a skinhead period. Neighborhood, grocery store, Walmart, ballgame.... Those guys scare me. Are affluent white people that are not used to black people really as scared of blacks like I am of skinheads? The affluent ones I know are pretty cool....but they know me. They don't know my cousin if you catch my drift.

I'm reading this as a 300 well worded justification as to why it was okay for Zimmermann to "check out" Trayvon Martin. Is that accurate? Justification for Zimmerman to "check out" Mr. Martin? More like an explanation of how I can see it happening. That's not justifying it or condoning it. Certainly not a justification for taking a young man's life. I do appreciate the "well worded" compliment.
