How many UK fans actually watch the games live?

Featured Replies

I know dozens of big-time UK fans(mostly the above 40 year old crowd) that never watch a UK game live because it makes them nervous, mad, superstition, etc. I'll see them at Wal-Mart, out mowing, etc. during all of the important games. One guy told me his wife went to the bathroom and UK took the lead in a tournament game last year and he made her stay in the bathroom until the game was over and she watched thru a crack in the door. When Pitino says UK fans will jump off bridges if they lose, he is right on the mark. I would say in the older crowd the percentage is high because they think they will jinx UK if they watch. A lot of people won't admit this because of how it sounds, but know it is true

sounds like you need to hang out with different people. I don't know a single UK fan that does this.

Every single one I know watches live. They may have to pace the room or walk out for a moment if they feel a panic coming on but it kills them to miss a game.

I hear this about fans from a lot of teams. People will get so nervous they cannot watch the game. My Aunt does it for UL when they are on television and in a close game. My mom would sometimes do it during UK games when I was kid.

I am more of a nervous fan at home than opposed to being at the game. The commercials kill me. Never have I gotten to the point where I could not watch.

I think anyone who believes anyone would literally jump off a bridge if UK loses is a moron. It's simply Pitino trying to play mind games, nothing more, nothing less.

I agree with Mobaar, it really sounds like you have some real "winners" as friends.

True confession. When we get in the tournament, I've gone to DVR games a lot of times and don't watch until I know the outcome. I did it last year vs. UNC in the Elite Eight but I watched the UConn game live. Mainly because beating UNC was more important (because of where I live) and everything last year was gravy to me.

This year I expected UK to get this far and beyond. Don't ask me for rhyme or reason. I watched IU game cause I wanted revenge. Yesterday I flipped back from movies to catch a score but watched it afterwards. This Saturday I will probably do the same.

It's not about superstition for me. It's about investment. When you watch a game live, you are making an investment of time, energy, blood pressure, Heart rate and the older I get, the worse I feel. When the Cats lost to WVU 3 years ago, it didn't hurt as bad because I was at a softball tourney for my daughter and missed it. Because I had so little investment in the game, it hurt the season was over, but not as bad as it hurt other times when I expected us to do well.

I wish I DVR'd the games...only to watch it a second time. I get anxious and nervous, but I think its foolish to not watch because you can't stand the pressure.

To each their own. I don't ask others to make my journey. It's select times and I just found it healthier for me to deal with my fandom in this way.

Last year during the West Virginia game in the second round I played Call of Duty when the game wasn't going well and UK started doing better. Returned and it stopped. The BGP UK community and I collectively decided that I should stay on Call of Duty for the remainder of the game. So yes, I've got some familiarity with the idea.

I know a few fans like that.

Also, my mom would rarely come to "big games" when I was playing football in high school because she was too nervous. Often times when she would come to games, she'd walk in the gate, and go find one of the boosters working the game and volunteer to work the concession stand so she could do something other than watch the game and get stressed out. I think the only Cov Cath post-season games she ever went to in all the years that my brothers and I played football were the two state championships we played in. God bless moms, worrying about their little boys

I don't watch all of the regular season games. Mostly because a lot of them fall on days I work. I do watch all post season games live.

I didn't mean it as an attack, my apologies. It just seems weird to me that people can get that worked up over it. Maybe when I get older I will understand.

It pains me to NOT watch a game live. If I am doing something that is preventing me from seeing the game, I generally feel some sort of anxiety attack coming on. It pains me much more to have no clue what is happening.

I only missed one game live this year...and it was against Indiana in December. I was not pleased.
