Beau Buchanan, Bowling Green (7-2, ranked #5 in 5A)

 

Week 9: South Warren's defense pressured and frustrated Buchanan all night long in Bowling Green's 38-12 loss to the Spartans, and it's reflected in his stat line - 9 of 23 for 84 yards with a TD and 2 ints.

 

Season to date: 151 of 259 for 1,695 yards and 18 TDs with 6 ints.

Joey Cambron, Daviess County (5-4, unranked in 6A)

 

Week 9: Cambron found his groove early against Muhlenberg County. He only needed twelve pass attempts to complete nine balls for 237 yards and 5 TDs. Half of his 30 touchdown passes have come in the last three games.

 

Season to date: 173 of 293 for 2,434 yards and 30 with 12 ints.

Gavin Spurrier, South Warren (9-0, ranked #2 in 5A)

 

Week 9: Spurrier's numbers in SW's decisive 38-12 victory over Bowling Green won't blow you away, partially due to the workhorse performance by Cameron Harrison. But he did connect on a pair of 2nd half touchdown passes to help put some distance between the Spartans and Purples.

 

Season to date: 99 of 142 for 1,528 yards and 25 TDs with 3 ints.

Braxton Ratliff, Ashland (9-1, ranked #3 in 4A)

 

Week 9: Hopes of an unbeaten season were dashed by Johnson Central, 47-24. Ratliff's legs are usually a productive weapon, but the Golden Eagles were in his face all night, holding him to -15 yards rushing on 13 carries. His arm was effective though, throwing for 154 yards and 2 TDs.

 

Season to date: 95 of 151 for 1,612 yards and 16 TDs with 4 ints. ; 79 rushes for 620 yards and 6 TDs

Chase Estep, Corbin (8-1, ranked #2 in 3A)

 

Week 9: With Estep's arm leading the way, Corbin laid waste to a solid Casey County squad, 41-0. The Redhounds’ passing game was in peak form, as he threw for 301 yards and 5 TDs.

 

Season to date: 113 of 166 for 2,103 yards with 28 TDs and 4 ints. ; 63 rushes for 375 yards and 7 TDs

Cameron Jones, Frederick Douglass (9-0, ranked #1 in 6A)

 

Week 9: The newly minted #1 team in 6A punctuated its district championship run with a comprehensive 36-3 victory over Henry Clay. Jones only attempted 13 passes, but completed 9 of them for 279 yards and 3 TDs.

 

Season to date: 114 of 153 for 2,255 yards and 26 TDs with 5 ints.

Wiley Cain, Pulaski County (7-2, ranked #8 in 5A)

 

Week 9: Cain tore up archrival Southwestern to the tune of 352 yards through the air. The Cain-to-Jake Sloan connection was on point once again, but he spread the love around versus the Warriors. Six different receivers had at least three receptions.

 

Season to date: 234 of 354 for 2,774 yards and 22 TDs with 7 ints.

Will Warren, Owensboro (7-2, ranked #8 in 5A)

 

Week 9: Owensboro's running game was in vintage form against Graves County, so Warren's pass attempts dipped to 18 after airing it out 30+ times in seven of his first eight games. He still wound up with 185 yards and 2 TDs as the Red Devils torched the Eagles, 47-6, to claim the district title.

 

Season to date: 156 of 257 for 2,327 yards and 27 TDs with 9 ints.

Running Backs

 

Wandale Robinson, Western Hills (6-3, ranked #10 in 3A)

 

Week 9: Robinson may have locked up the 2018 Mr. Football award last Friday versus Boyle County. Obviously, there's still a long way to go, and someone could sway voters with a championship winning playoff run stacked with one impressive performance after another. But Wandale's showing against the Rebels just further cements his status as the most dominating, impactful player in the state. Boyle County completely shut him down in two games last year. This time around, Robinson ran for 189 yards and 2 scores, as well as logging 11 tackles on defense. His presence on the field created opportunities for his teammates that otherwise wouldn't have existed, and kept the Wolverines in the game longer than anyone outside of Frankfort could have expected.

 

Season to date: 176 carries for 1,749 yards and 27 TDs ; 19 catches for 390 yards and 7 TDs ; 2 TD passes ; 2 kick return TDs ; 96 tackles (10 TFL) ; 3 interceptions (1 pick-six) ; 5 forced fumbles

Casey McGinness, Covington Catholic (9-0, ranked #1 in 5A)

 

Week 9: In an abbreviated night's work, McGinness ran for 119 yards on just nine carries and 4 TDs (all in the 2nd quarter) as CovCath routed Dixie Heights, 50-8.

 

Season to date: 151 carries for 1,462 yards and 23 TDs ; 15 catches for 221 yards and 3 TDs

Tre’ Bass, Franklin-Simpson (8-1, ranked #2 in 4A)

 

Week 9: In a match-up of two of the top three rushers in 4A, Bass outduelled Warren East's Thomas Maxey in FS's 47-0 blowout victory. Bass finished with exactly 200 yards rushing and 3 TDs, compared to Maxey's 64 yards on 27 carries.

 

Season to date: 96 carries for 1,315 yards and 21 TDs

Jayden Neace, Perry County Central (7-2, unranked in 5A)

 

Week 9: There's no question that Neace is having a monster year individually. But PCC needed to take advantage of its schedule and maintain a zero in the loss column for him to have any shot of even being a finalist for this award. Despite another productive game from its feature back (169 yards and a TD), the Commodores got hammered by Harlan County 40-14 last week. That loss pushes PCC to 3rd place in their district with a possible 1st Round exit looming.

 

Season to date: 214 carries for 1,989 yards and 30 TDs

Kent Trey Matthews, Mayfield (9-0, ranked #1 in 2A)

 

Week 9: For the past few weeks, Mayfield has been neck deep in the easiest portion of its schedule. Matthews has only carried the ball 10 times combined in the past two games, but still scored 4 TDs.

 

Season to date: 148 carries for 1,256 yards and 20 TDs

Landan Swartz, Bath County (6-3, unranked in 3A)

 

Week 9: Swartz is basically stuck in the same situation as Neace - monster numbers, but without the team success to match. Last week, aside from a 70 yard kickoff return TD, Russell kept Swartz fenced in. In his worst game since his sophomore year, he only managed 53 yards on 14 carries in Bath County's 42-6 loss.

 

Season to date: 206 rushes for 1,659 yards and 20 TDs ; 3 kick return TDs ; 44 tackles ; 5 ints.

Joe Jackson, Johnson Central (8-1, ranked #1 in 4A)

 

Week 9: JC saw something they liked from Devin Johnson at fullback against Ashland, and he delivered with a season best 144 yards on 17 carries. Johnson's productivity cut into Jackson's a little. But he still delivered 93 yards and a TD in JC's 47-24 win over #3 Ashland.

 

Season to date: 138 rushes for 1,246 yards and 19 TDs ; 2 receiving TDs

Dalton Cook, Lynn Camp (8-1, ranked #9 in 1A)

 

Week 9: Cook and the rest of Lynn Camp's offense did enough to win, but their defense was MIA in the Wildcats’ 72-44 loss to Williamsburg. Cook's 169 yards rushing pushed him past the 2,000 yard mark, making him the first to reach that plateau this season.

 

Season to date: 141 carries for 2,058 yards and 25 TDs

Demarco Fishback, Frederick Douglass (9-0, ranked #1 in 6A)

 

Week 9: Fishback ran for 69 yards and 2 TDs in FD's district title clinching win over Henry Clay. Sixty-one of those yards came on one touchdown run.

 

Season to date: 104 carries for 947 yards and 18 TDs ; 15 receptions for 239 yards and 4 TDs

Wide Receivers

 

Demontae Crumes, Butler (7-3, ranked #4 in 6A)

 

Week 9: Crumes’ seven catches versus St. X represented his busiest night of the season. But his 68 yards and TD reception weren't quite enough to help the Bears overcome the Tigers.

Marquel Tinsley, Daviess County (5-4, unranked in 6A)

 

Week 9: Per usual, Tinsley was the primary beneficiary of his QBs big night. He hauled in 7 passes for 107 yards and 3 scores against Muhlenberg County. Tinsley now ranks in the top 10 all time in career pass receptions and career receiving yardage. He's currently tied with Male's Montrell Jones for 3rd all time in career receiving TDs.

 

Season to date: 61 receptions for 1,102 yards and 16 TDs

Linemen

 

Bryan Hudson, Scott County (7-3, ranked #7 in 6A)

 

Week 9: The Cardinals put up nearly 300 yards and 5 TDs on the ground in Scott County's 44-18 win over Pleasure Ridge Park.

 

Season to date: Scott County averages a 6A best 318 rushing yards per game ; 53 tackles (20 TFL) ; 5 sacks

Jacob Lacey, South Warren (9-0, ranked #2 in 5A)

 

Week 9: In perhaps his finest performance of the season, Lacey was a force on the interior against Bowling Green. He posted a season high 9 tackles with three tackles for loss, including a sack. He anchored a unit that gave BG little room to run, allowing just 53 yards rushing.

 

Season to date: 45 tackles (18 TFL) ; 5 sacks ; 2 forced fumbles

Tanner Bowles, Glasgow (8-1, ranked #6 in 2A)

 

Week 9: Glasgow had 391 yards (252 rushing) of offense in its 53-0 victory over Metcalfe County

JJ Weaver, Moore (8-1, ranked #8 in 4A)

 

Week 9: Weaver's versatility was on full display against John Hardin. The 6’6”, 240 lb defensive end totalled six tackles, including a sack. He also returned an interception for a TD and added a TD reception on offense. His list of potential college suitors includes UK, UofL, Georgia, Miami, Ole Miss, Tennessee, and Purdue.

 

Season to date: 54 tackles ; 10 sacks ; 2 ints. (one pick-six) ; 4 catches for 70 yards and 2 TDs

Milton Wright, Christian Academy of Louisville (9-0, ranked #2 in 2A)

 

Week 9: Wright topped 100 yards of total offense (61 receiving, 54 rushing, 16 passing) and caught a TD in CAL's 49-0 win over Washington County. Once again, he played little to no defense.

 

Season to date: 44 catches for 559 yards and 6 TDs ; 17 rushes for 193 yards and 3 TDs ; 2 kick return TDs ; 29 tackles (3.5 TFL)

Logan Castleman, Beechwood (7-2, ranked #1 in 1A)

 

Week 9: Five rushes for 55 yards and 2 TDs concludes Castleman's run against three overmatched district opponents that Beechwood outscored a combined 187-19. The rivalry game with NewCath should demand a little more from the Tigers’ multifaceted star.

 

Season to date: 95 carries for 783 yards and 13 TDs ; 11 catches for 100 yards and 2 TDs ; 3 ints. (2 returned for TDs)

Drew Sawyers, Southwestern (8-1, ranked #10 in 5A)

 

Week 9: In Southwestern's biggest game of the year, Sawyers was largely kept quiet by Pulaski County's defense. There was nothing to be had through the air, as he finished just 2 of 4 for 23 yards and an interception. He did contribute to the run game with 81 yards rushing, but didn't account for a single TD for the first time since Week 1.

 

Season to date: 50 of 83 for 808 yards and 7 TDs ; 102 rushes for 937 and 10 TDs ; 2 interceptions (1 pick-six) ; 4 kick return TDs
