The final week of the season is upon us and what a season it has been in the 11th Region. As always with this region we talk about it being one of the top regions in the state along with the 6th and 7th. I believe this year the 11th has been far and away the toughest most competitive region overall in the state. A couple of state championship contenders loom at the top of the rankings followed by a group of 3/4 teams that can beat anyone on any given night. Lets check out what is going on in the 11th Region this week!

 

Team of the Week

Madison Central - Not only are the Indians the hottest team in the region right now, they may be the hottest team in the state! This past week Madison Central picked up a pair of blowout victories on the road at Lexington Catholic and at home against Franklin County. The tribe continue to roll!!

 

Player of the Week

Eric Boone - Bryan Station - Eric Boone picks up another Player of the Week award. Over the week Eric averaged 24 points and 11 rebounds in 3 games in which the Defenders went 2-1. Congrats to Eric on a great week and a great season!

 

Team Rankings

1. Scott County (26-1) - The Cardinals remain in the #1 spot this week where they have been all season. Last week Scott County defeated Woodford County on the road in a close game where Moreno and Robb didn't play the second half and then handled Floyd Central at home over the weekend. This week Scott County welcomes Zion Harmon and Adair County to Georgetown along with Paul Laurence Dunbar and sandwiches a trip to Covington Holy Cross in between.

 

2. Madison Central (21-6) - Our team of the week, the Indians just continue to roll along. This past week they picked up two big blowout wins over Franklin County and Lexington Catholic. I wasn't surprised they beat the Knights, however I was surprised at the margin, 37!! Two big games loom this week for the Indians as they travel to South Laurel to face a good Cardinal team and then come home to host Covington Catholic in a showdown between 2 of the state's top teams.

 

3. Lafayette (18-7) - The Generals avenged and early season loss to Bryan Station this week with an impressive 16 point victory over the Defenders. This weekend they fell hard to an outstanding Trinity team. All is not lost however for the Generals, due to a loss by LCA, Lafayette is now the #1 seed in the 43rd District tournament. That in itself is a win in that murders row of a district. This week the Generals host LCA and head to Frederick Douglass to wrap up the regular season.

 

4. Bryan Station (21-5) - The Defenders started off the week losing on the road to a good Lafayette team but did manage to salvage the week with a blowout victory over Tates Creek and an impressive road victory over a good Pulaski County team. Eric Boone continues to carry the Defenders as they head into the final week of the season. This week Bryan Station hosts Taylor County and LCA to finish up what has been an outstanding regular season.

 

5. Lexington Catholic (17-8) - The Knights had one of the most up and down weeks a team can have this past week. Early in the week they were dismantled by Madison Central at home, then defeated LCA on the road in overtime in what some people would label an instant classic, then finished the week with a win at Taylor County in blowout fashion. Unfortunately, for the Knights the win over LCA came at a grave cost, as big man Zan Payne was lost for the season in a gruesome leg injury at the end of the 4th quarter. Get well soon to Zan, a long road ahead for him. Up next the Knights finish the regular season with a home game against Lincoln County then head to Wayne County at the end of the week.

 

6. Lexington Christian Academy (20-7) - The Eagles entered the week with a chance to still claim the #1 seed in the 43rd District tournament. The week started well with a blowout victory over Tates Creek but ended with an overtime loss to Lexington Catholic. With that loss the Eagles are locked in as the 3 seed in the 43rd District which will result in a rematch with the Knights in 2 weeks time. I do believe the Eagles will finish this season well above the #6 line in the region but for now with results of the past week, this is where they will be. Up next is a chance to make a huge statement this week as the Eagles hit the road for matchups at Lafayette, at Bryan Station, and at Trinity. If the Eagles can manage 3 wins I believe the outlook might be a lot different in the region prior to the postseason.

 

7. Paul Laurence Dunbar (10-13) - The 7th ranked team in this region has a losing record and is the 4 seed in their own district. but make no mistake if the Bulldogs were in any other region in the state they would be near the top. This past week Dunbar picked up 2 city wins on the road over Frederick Douglass and Henry Clay in overtime. The win over Henry Clay came from a half court buzzer beater by Robbie Kinnard. This week is no easier as the Bulldogs host a good West Jessamine team and then head to Scott County to end the week.

 

8. Henry Clay (16-11) - The Blue Devils continue their streaky play. As I said at the beginning of the season this is just a team I cant figure out. This week the Blue Devils picked up wins over 41st District foes Franklin County and Woodford County and then dropped an overtime decision to Dunbar. Dunbar has beaten the Blue Devils twice this year both times in the last month so for that I have to rank PLD slightly above Henry Clay. Up next for the Blue Devils is a matchup with a top 10th Region team GRC and then they head to Taylor County to end the week.

 

9. Frankfort (12-12) - The Panthers finished the week 1-1 with a win over Bourbon County and a close loss at 12th Region favorite Mercer County by 7. John Tillman missed the victory over Bourbon but returned to play spot minutes for the Panthers at Mercer County. Up next the Panthers host Berea before heading to Madison Southern and Thomas Nelson to finish the regular season.

 

10. Frederick Douglass (13-14) - The Broncos finished the week 1-1 as well. Picking up a win over Floyd Central in a battle of 2 first year schools, and dropping a close one to PLD. The Broncos wrap up their inaugural season with home games against GRC and Lafayette.

 

11. Woodford County (14-12) - The Yellow Jackets are losers of 4 in a row but have been playing some tight contests against good competition. This past week they dropped 3 close games to West Jessamine, Scott County, and Henry Clay. This week the Yellow Jackets head to Mercer County and host Bourbon County to end the regular season.

 

12. Franklin County (11-16) - The Flyers have lost 3 in a row but a lot like Woodford County it comes against stellar competition. The lost two games this week on the road at Henry Clay and Madison Central. Franklin County will end the regular season with home games against Harrison County and Anderson County.

 

13. Model (16-9) - The Patriots only had 1 game this past week but picked up an impressive win over 10th Region All A champion Robertson County. The Patriots will finish the season with a trip to Nicholas County before hosting Jackson County in the season finale.

 

14. Madison Southern (11-15) - The Eagles finished the week 1-2 picking up a win over Western Hills and falling to GRC and Pikeville. Up next the Eagles will host Tates Creek and Frankfort with a trip to Whitley County sandwiched in between.

 

15. Sayre (11-15) - The Spartans finished the week 1-1 with a win over Nicholas County and a close loss to a decent Wolfe County team at the end of the week. This week the Spartans close out the regular season with two home games against Western Hills and St. Francis and a trip to East Jessamine.

 

16. Western Hills (9-17) - The Wolverines finished the week at 2-1 picking up wins over Berea and Nicholas County but fell to Madison Southern. Western Hills hasn't finished a season with more then 10 wins since the 2010/11 season and they have a chance to do that this week as they head to Sayre and then finish the week at home with games against Wolfe County and Garrard County.

 

17. Berea (13-10) - The Pirates had a nice week with two double digit victories over Owsley County and Burgin and a close loss to Western Hills. That was enough to just barely move them past Tates Creek and out of the cellar. The Pirates end the season with a road game against Frankfort and then the home finale against Frankfort Christian Academy.

 

18. Tates Creek (4-23) - Its hard to believe it and I never thought I would actually put them at the bottom but results of teams above speak for themselves. The losing streak for the Commodores has reached 14 and this past week wasn't much better they fell to LCA and Bryan Station in blowout fashion. This week the regular season comes to a close with a trip to Madison Southern before the Paris Greyhounds visit Lexington.
