3rd Region Rankings (12/21/15)

Recommended Posts

The 3rd has one clear cut favorite right now, and then everyone else. There is not much difference separating the #2 and number 11 or 12 ranked teams...

1.Meade Co(9-0 SAME) - The Waves got big region wins over Breck and Hancock last week. The Tigers were a good early season test for Meade but they got the 7-63 win on the road. Meade remains unbeaten as they head to the Mercer County Christmas tourney this week.

2.Daviess Co(7-1 UP 1) - DC struggled a little vs Whitesville Trinity this past week but bounced back nicely with a big 88-61 win over Butler County. Stewart Currie continues his dominance averaging 25 points and 12 boards last week. DC has a tough test later today vs Christian County in the OIT.

3.Breck Co(6-2 DOWN 1) - The fighting Tigers lost a close district contest to Meade last Tuesday but have bounced back with 3 straight wins vs Grayson, St Patrick and Portland,TN. Cody Mingus led the way last week, averaging 18ppg. Breck finishes out their own tourney this week before heading to Panama City Beach next week.

4.Owensboro(2-4 SAME) - The record isn't pretty yet, but OHS gets better every time out. The Devils pushed a very good Christian County team to the brink last week, losing 71-63. Cory Gardener is starting to emerge as a player to watch, putting up 27 vs the Colonels. OHS will have big matchups this week vs Henderson and Catholic in the OIT.

5.Muhlenberg(4-2 UP 5) - The 5 spot seems to be cursed. Whoever moves into this slot seems to come back with a tough week. The Mustangs are a hard team to peg, but I got to see them in a win vs Ohio Co last week. Coach Stovall is doing a great job with this squad. Noah Mcelwain put up 26 points and is showing he is one of the most consistent scorers across the region. Muhlenberg heads to McCreary Co for their Christmas tourney this week.

6.Owensboro Catholic(2-4 UNRANKED) - The Aces have had a nice week with two big wins(Apollo & Henderson). Tim Riley is starting to put his stamp on this team. As Cam Obryan and Ray Zuerber start to get their legs under them, the Aces are going to get better and better. Catholic too plays in the OIT this week with South Warren later today and OHS tomorrow.

7.Hancock(4-4 SAME) - While Hancock lost a tough one to #1 Meade at home, they bounced back with a nice win vs Edmonson County in their own holiday tournament. The Hornets have a decent shot at winning that tournament and heading into Christmas on an upswing.

8.Apollo(2-5 DOWN 3) - After winning two games in a row, the Eagles have now lost two in a row. Apollo was in control vs Catholic thru 3 and a half quarters, then the wheels fell off. They were outscored 21-4 down the stretch. Apollo will try to bounce back in the OIT with games vs Mclean and Daviess County.

9.Edmonson(5-3 DOWN 3) - The Wildcats had a busy week last week, playing 4 games. They went 2-2 with wins vs LaRue and Thomas Nelson. They lost to Hancock and Barren Co. The Wildcats will finish the week playing consolation games in the Hancock Co Christmas tourney.

10.Grayson Co(4-3 DOWN 1) - The Cougars are a sneaky team to watch going forward. They suffered 2 tough 1 point losses in a row to Warren East and Breck Co. Had the ball bounced the other way, Grayson could be 6-1. They finished the week with two straight wins vs Portland TN and Cloverport.

11.Whitesville Trinity(5-3) - The Raiders had a real nice week last week, finishing 2-1. Daniel Morris nearly pushed them to an upset win over Daviess County last Tuesday. Since then, they beat Joppa IL and Dawson Springs.

12.McLean Co(2-5) - The Cougars continue to tumble down the standings after big losses to Webster, Henderson and Daviess County. The Cougars have to much talent to continue to struggle. They have a big matchup with former coach Steve Barker and the Apollo Eagles later tonight.

13.Ohio Co(3-5) - Coach Steve Sparks makes this group of Eagles a team to watch as the season progresses. The Eagles bounced back after a loss to Muhlenberg Co, with two straight wins vs Logan Co and Butler Co. Big man Travis Carter and top notch point guard Conner Wilson gives Ohio Co a nice inside out combination.

14.Butler Co(3-3) - The Bears entered the top 10 last week but lost big to two region opponents in Daviess Co(88-61) & Ohio Co(63-50). The Bears have some wins but need to be more consistent.

15.Cloverport(0-8) - The Aces are struggling to replace 7 seniors and all region player Nick Smith. Results over the past week have shown they are getting more and more competitive.
