The kids were just introduced to the new coach, Coach Josh Hughes. He has worked on the staff under Corky Prater and Brandon Combs. Josh is the varsity baseball coach. Great guy, a lot of the kids like him, should be able to get the numbers. Just not sure what scheme he will run. The first couple of practices for the kids should be interesting, trying to adapt to his style whatever it may be.

I doubt this. I dont think he minds helping where needed but I dont think he wants the head coaching responsibilities. I have heard that Corky's nephew, Keith Prater was interested in the job. I have also heard that Josh Hughes (Varsity Baseball Coach) and Dave Collins have applied. Im not sure on any of these though. I think best choice would to bring someone from outside the county with the same work ethic expected that Coach Combs brought.

Laziness! Kids werent committed to his approach and work effort and therefore dont even come out for the team.Coach Combs really pushes kids in the weight room and on the field to benefit themselves but they dont look at it that way. They would prefer to sit at home and do nothing rather then work.

IMO, Lewis co. needs to bring in someone who will continue to run the same offense Coach Combs ran. With Andy Downing at QB, he has the smarts to head the offense. With more players, Jake Bolander and Frankie Witten will be forces on defense. And hopefully, this coach will bring some assistants to help incorporate his ideas quickly. Some of the assistants can stay to help, but the new coach needs to get involoved ASAP.

Unfortunately, Coach Combs has turned in his resignation and will be taking a job elsewhere within the state. Although last season was rough, I thought he could really turn things around this season with the numbers he is having come out. Coach Combs is a great guy and wish him the best of luck next year, really suprised me when I heard the news though. I think it would be best for Lewis Co. to find a coach from outside of Lewis Co. considering there is really no good option within the county. We'll see what happens, Coach Combs had a camp scheduled in Auburn this summer and I dont know if the players will now be able to attend. Some good players returning, especially at Quarterback (Andy Downing), Lineman (Jake Bolander), and WR.

Both players can play either guard position. Chris Owens was runner-up last year to Darius for All-Area player of the year. Owens is the better of the 2 at shooting, but both were good players for St. Pat.

Lewis Co. was able to hit 4 homeruns last night in the second game and Mason Co. had 1 homer. I was told by a player that the wind always seems to be helping.

Lewis Co. returns Frankie Witten, Terrence Smith, and Kurt Cropper. This will be a very inexperienced group with probably 70% of the shots coming from Witten and Smith. I think Fleming Co. returns most of their players, seems like there entire starting 5 was sophmores. Dont really know if any of them can be considered as the top players, dont really know enough about this team to stay. It seems that East has some good players returning, the 6'6 center who was a sophmore this year. Rose Hill will have some young players returning, will have to develop some of there young talent. All teams will have to compete with the Fab-5 for Elliott. Boyles will be one of the top players in the region, seem #34 (or 33?) will be returning, and then the player for Elliott.

I would agree. I think Phares will be in contention next year for MR. KY Basketball although with the people around him, it will be difficult for him to get the recognition he probably should.

if your brain is on drugs slowpitch (beer league) is more exciting than fastpitch. Should the mentioned pitcher apologize for being so good ? Maybe the offensive players could dedicate a similair amount of practice time to hitting as she has pitching ? But please don't dumb the game down any !

Coach Combs has drastically improved the weight lifting program at Lewis Co. He served as the strength and conditioning manager for UK before he came to Lewis Co. Combs will have this team turned around with time, assistance, and support from the school and community.

I'd say three unearned runs was probably about right. This number is down from last year, I think the team probably averaged 5+ errors last year. Cole Cooper is a very good outfielder, but the team lacks a true 2nd and 3rd baseman. These positions will be played by a committee of players, all depending on who is pitching.

Shaw pitched the first 4 innings and gave up 3 runs. Bolander pitched the 5th and gave up 3 runs. Nick Ginn pitched the 6th and the start of the 7th, not sure how many runs he gave up. Ryan Calvert came in to relieve Ginn and gave up runs that didnt count. Errors cost Lewis all last season and will probably be the downfall of this team again this year. I also think Coach Hughes will be better off playing the best players no matter what age or grade, keep playing the best.

Incorrect. Due to the fact that only 6 1/2 innings were played due to darkness, the official score was 6-3 according to Riherds.

Have to agree. I really thought the Mason Co. coaching staff did a great job this year. They had a lot of talent and got the most out of it. I heard some rumors of what might happen if O'Hearn didnt win the state, and I couldnt believe what I was hearing with the season he has had. Shame that has to go on, but with so much talent comes so many expectations. Congrats Mason Co. coaches.

Russ, IMO, had the 2nd most complete tournament performance, behind teammate Darius. I watched Russ play many games during the regular season, and saw many inconsistent games. His best game of the year was by far the Elliott Co. game in Feb. where he scored a career high 27 points. I watched each of the state tournament games as well as the regional championship and in that five game span, he performed well in all games. I want to congragulte Russ as well as Darius and Ethan on making the all-tourney team and wish them all the best of luck next year.

2003 team by 10 maybe better. Even if Darius guarded Chris he couldnt stop him, watching Darius play, he rarely plays defense out past the 3 point line. The Chris Lofton I seen play high school ball was not afraid to take a 25 or 30footer. Also, Wes Jones was a terrific defender and i believe he could give Miller fits. So take him somewhat out of the scoring threat and 08 Mason cant hang with him. Setty would have to be draining the 3 ball for mason to compete. Also just to throw it out had Wes Jones been able to play the 04 State Tournament, Mason would have been one of the few to win consecutive titles.

Are the some of the pictures taken today at the Fieldhouse? Did they have a ceremony or parade for the team today? What else might they do throughout the week for the team?

Im saying that a player getting off the bench and walking to the scorers table crossing over the out-of-bounds line. While the player is walking, he could be talking to a coach, not paying much attention to the game at that point, stepping a few feet on the floor, and being in the court of play. While talking to the coach , the ball could be stollen and pushed up the sideline where the player might interfere with the ball or another player therefore causing controversy. It doesnt have anything to do with fighting, Im just asking if he should be given a technical for being on the court? He had no intention of causing problems, but he did.

I wanted to set the record straight; his name is spelled Slone (not Sloan). However you want to spell it, he looked like a very good basketball player and hard worker. I'd like to see him get the chance to play at the next level. He scored the most points this year in a state tournament game (I believe 35) and that will something he can always claim. And everyone has his opinion on how far he went onto the floor, but should players who are checking into the game be allowed to cross the out-of-bounds for the fear that they could start a fight?
